The Defense Rests (Sec. Gates: Resigning in part before U.S. goes down on Obama's watch)
Newsweek ^ | Sunday, June 19, 2011 | John Barry and Tara McKelvey

Posted on 06/19/2011 3:28:26 PM PDT by kristinn

Aboard the Pentagon jet on his last foreign trip as secretary of defense, Robert Gates takes a moment to peer across the American horizon—and the view is dire: the U.S. is in danger of losing its supremacy on the global stage, he says.

“I’ve spent my entire adult life with the United States as a superpower, and one that had no compunction about spending what it took to sustain that position,” he tells NEWSWEEK, seated in a windowless conference room aboard the Boeing E-4B. “It didn’t have to look over its shoulder because our economy was so strong. This is a different time.”

A pause.

“To tell you the truth, that’s one of the many reasons it’s time for me to retire, because frankly I can’t imagine being part of a nation, part of a government … that’s being forced to dramatically scale back our engagement with the rest of the world.”

First, this is from Newsweek (the seat of DoubleSpeak). Remember the cover stating that we are ALL Socialists Now? Well, WE aren't.

Second, there is nothing wrong with scaling down government. And there is nothing wrong with telling our enemies that we will no longer be blackmailed into supporting them financially....Tell the Marxist at the U.N. to go straight to hell (whence they came). Tell the rest of the foreign slimes who have put us under assault that we will trade with our friends and do no favors with those who seek to destroy us. FUBO!

Getting out before the DADT liberated homosexuals get a hold of HIM.

Too bad the average sailor, soldier, airman and marine about to be homosexually molested and PC punished if they complain don't have the same privilege.

Gates was a good public servant.

I’d still rather have Don Rumsfeld at the helm of DOD, warts and all.

There is everything wrong in backing away from the world, ‘leading from behind’ and hollowing out our military.

“I’d still rather have Don Rumsfeld at the helm of DOD, warts and all.”

Both Rumsfeld and Gates have their strenghts and weaknesses. If it wasn’t for his caving on DADT, Gates would have been a decent SECDEF in many ways.

What kind of AMERICAN only want’s to wield power then
when things get tough, want’s to bug out?

Yeah, we’re gonna have to cut back, make do with less,
that’s the kind of challenge AMERICAN’s thrive on, we
do what needs be done. We don’t pack up and hike once
the cream is off the top!!!

I got no use for someone like Gates and I sure wouldn’t want
him in a fox hole with me.

I reject the concept of “leading from behind” altogether.

That is just another way of saying “NOT LEADING AT ALL.”

Gates was selected for his pro-homosexual stance.

Your tagline reminded me of that wonderful leadership speech; gives me an excuse to trot it again!

Enter the KING

WESTMORELAND. O that we now had here But one ten thousand of those men in England That do no work to-day!

KING. What's he that wishes so? My cousin Westmoreland? No, my fair cousin; If we are mark'd to die, we are enow To do our country loss; and if to live, The fewer men, the greater share of honour. God's will! I pray thee, wish not one man more. By Jove, I am not covetous for gold, Nor care I who doth feed upon my cost; It yearns me not if men my garments wear; Such outward things dwell not in my desires. But if it be a sin to covet honour, I am the most offending soul alive. No, faith, my coz, wish not a man from England. God's peace! I would not lose so great an honour As one man more methinks would share from me For the best hope I have. O, do not wish one more! Rather proclaim it, Westmoreland, through my host, That he which hath no stomach to this fight, Let him depart; his passport shall be made, And crowns for convoy put into his purse; We would not die in that man's company That fears his fellowship to die with us. This day is call'd the feast of Crispian. He that outlives this day, and comes safe home, Will stand a tip-toe when this day is nam'd, And rouse him at the name of Crispian. He that shall live this day, and see old age, Will yearly on the vigil feast his neighbours, And say 'To-morrow is Saint Crispian.' Then will he strip his sleeve and show his scars, And say 'These wounds I had on Crispian's day.' Old men forget; yet all shall be forgot, But he'll remember, with advantages, What feats he did that day. Then shall our names, Familiar in his mouth as household words- Harry the King, Bedford and Exeter, Warwick and Talbot, Salisbury and Gloucester- Be in their flowing cups freshly rememb'red. This story shall the good man teach his son; And Crispin Crispian shall ne'er go by, From this day to the ending of the world, But we in it shall be remembered- We few, we happy few, we band of brothers; For he to-day that sheds his blood with me Shall be my brother; be he ne'er so vile, This day shall gentle his condition; And gentlemen in England now-a-bed Shall think themselves accurs'd they were not here, And hold their manhoods cheap whiles any speaks That fought with us upon Saint Crispin's day.

(A few favorite parts emphasized!)

Gates would have more credibility if he wasn’t in favor of gays infesting our military.

Hey Gates, maybe if you took a smaller plane than a Boeing E-4B to shuttle your around, we would have more cash for the military.

Perhaps North Korea developing the ability to put an EMP bomb in a missile with the range and power to knock out the entire North American continent and our illustrious Senate doing NOTHING to harden our current power suply because it wasn’t as important as hackers had something to do with it...

Perhaps Iran’s ability to launch missiles into space now has something to do with it, now that they have enough weaponized plutonium to make one hell of a lot of bombs...

Truth.

Under Gates the DoD budget increased 44%. If we cut it back to 2006 levels we would still outspend China, Russia, Saudi Arabia, India, Brazil, United Arab Emirates, Turkey and Iran combined by 26%.
