A mother who shocked America by drowning her five children in the bathtub may be freed by the end of the year, according to her lawyer.

Andrea Yates systematically murdered her children, aged between six months and seven years, at her suburban Clear Lake, Texas, home ten years ago today.

She then dialled 911 and told the first police officer who arrived at the house: 'I just killed my kids.'

“This woman was really a case of Post Partnum depression.”

No, it was the more severe diagnosis of Post Partum Psychosis. It has been proven that the dumping of hormones can, in rare cases, become so severe after childbirth, for months, that the mother can have a break with reality and be compelled to act in ways harmful to herself and children. Her husband did not get her the help she needed.

Her husband was more responsible for killing the kids than this poor crazy woman.

That you don't understand that doesn't matter.

BTW, her control freak husband wasted no time remarrying and started having more kids.

We have the death penalty in TX...do you have it in your state?

I talked once with my therapist about this woman at the time of the murders and (because I was diagnosed as mentally ill) he told me that he had taken a look at the psychological profile of Yates and it apparently pointed out that she lacked empathy and had several traits that killers (cold blooded) usually have. She was hardly just mentally ill. If she ends up killing again (likely), I am more than hopeful that next time around, she gets death. Her husband isn’t at fault, according to many, he suggested putting the kids in normal schooling, but she wouldn’t agree to it.

I’m hopeful they don’t. This had to have been premeditated; she locked the doors, blocked off escape routes, and had to chase the last kid around the house until she cuaght him. This wasn’t something spontaneous.

Same here; I doubt she will manage to find any interested suitors or men interested in going within a mile of her. She shoudl just stay locked up.

We are both correct...

It was a case of Psychotic Post Partum Depression...a Post Partum Depression can BECOME Psychotic Depression...

Now, could you please explain that again to the posters that think she “got away “ with murder. They don’t believe this could happen.

I read the whole story and my opinion has not changed other to say to you that I believe the diagnosis of mental illness is way too over prescribed.

Don't get me wrong, I believe that some folks do suffer from these illnesses, but in this day and age, (the past 30 years, perhaps), too many criminals have been getting off on legal technicalities because of their so-called mental illness; sorry, FRiend, but murder is murder, it's the taking of another human life, and regardless of the reason, the guilty need to be held accountable and be punished accordingly.

I don't want to kill anyone, I just want justice served.

You are full of information that I've never heard before...and I got the local news about it at the time.

Your therapist should have taken a look at her husband's psychological profile.

I hope you changed therapists.

Lots of women go through it and they don’t kill their kids. Usually they end up crying their hearts out, yelling at their husbands, and sulking and feeling self pity. Most others would torch themselves rather than lay a hand on their kids to harm them.

It used to be that people lived in communities worthy of the name, and had extended families and friends who helped one another out. That sort of society probably provided more real help to women with post-partum issues than our broken society. We have people living in their own little castles, which sounds good but doesn’t lend itself to dealing with situations like this where a helpful friend or family member could have made all the difference in the world.

In America, crazy people are exempt from punishment. There is a cottage industry to make excuses for this trash.

I once mentioned that mental illness, being in a category different from usual cases of murder, usually end up acquitted. I stated on a thread about Jared Loughner (Tucson shooter) that insanity should be punished in an entirely different way, not used as an excuse to let someone off of the hook.

Get another therapist.

As to your idea that the husband wanted the kids in ‘normal schooling”, uh, not.

This woman was really a case of Post Partnum depression.

I don't care what your excuse is, you murder five kids you need to be put down.

This Freudian nonsense that treats people like machines excuses all kinds of horrific behavior. When you excuse and justify evil you wind up with a lot more of it.

Having had to deal with crazy people for some time, I think there is a HUGE need to start getting these loonies in line.

He's a real "piece of work." A real jerk!

Remember, too, I think some of the time he had her homeschooling, they were living in a school bus.

That's enough to drive anybody in their right mind ...crazy! LOL!

Well, golly, then lets go back 70 years and just kill mentally ill people..cause that is where this line of thinking goes. And eye for an eye...right?

you are wrong, that the insanity defence is NOT easy to get off on...and the statistics prove that. the person is still held accountable. this woman WAs punished.

You want justice served? ha. She will live with this for the rest of her life...now that she is not psychotic and can see what she did.

I agree.

People bash the husband for not knowing, well, how does anyone think he felt, coming home to the police and the bodies of his children? Think that wouldn’t wreck the lives of a guy? Think that a man wouldn’t want to move on? She KILLED those kids and in some fuzzy way, knew what she was doing. She killed them methodically and systematically and chased the last kid down who was screaming for his life. There’s a difference between the baby blues and being a killer.

Ok, you have no idea of different types of mental illness. Can’t help you there.

to avoid future ignorance on this topic I humbly suggest you read about “ Postpartum Depression.”
