Road Trip: Dover Air Force Base, Delaware

Dover Air Force Base or Dover AFB (IATA: DOV, ICAO: KDOV, FAA LID: DOV) is a United States Air Force base located two miles south of the city of Dover, Delaware.

Dover AFB is home to the 436th Airlift Wing (436 AW) of the Air Mobility Command (AMC), known as the "Eagle Wing", and the AMC-gained 512th Airlift Wing (512 AW) of the Air Force Reserve Command (AFRC), referred to as the "Liberty Wing". It was the only base to solely operate the massive C-5 Galaxy, with two active flying squadrons (the 3rd Airlift Squadron, which now operates the C-17 Globemaster III, and 9th Airlift Squadron) and two Air Force Reserve flying squadrons (the 326th Airlift Squadron and the 709th Airlift Squadron).

Construction began of Municipal Airport, Dover Airdrome began in March 1941 and the facility was opened on December 17, 1941. It was converted to an Army Air Corps airfield just weeks after December 7, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor. It was renamed Dover Army Airbase on April 8, 1943; Dover Subbase on June 6, 1943 and Dover Army Airfield on February 2, 1944. With the establishment of the United States Air Force on September 17, 1947, the facility was renamed Dover Air Force Base on January 13, 1948.

The 436th Airlift Wing traces its roots back to the 436th Troop Carrier Group of World War II fame that activated at Baer Field, Indiana on April 1, 1943. After months of training at Alliance Army Airfield, Neb., the group was assigned to the 9th Air Force, IX Troop Carrier Command, 53rd Troop Carrier Wing, in the European Theatre of Operations. Flying the C-47 Skytrain and based out of Bottesford, and later, Membury, England, the 436th TCG participated in four major airborne operations prior to the Allied victory in May 1945.

During WWII, the 4146 Base Unit was involved in secret rocket development at what was then known as Dover Army Airfield. The building complex where these military secret operations took place was Hangar 1301. From the 1950s to the 1970s, various fighter squadrons called the hangar home. In the 1990s after restoration and placement on the National Register of Historic Places, Hangar 1301 was given new life as the home of the Air Mobility Command Museum.

The Air Mobility Command Museum is a part of the National Museum of the United States Air Force's field museum system. Air Mobility Command is a major command of the United States Air Force. Its mission is to deliver maximum war-fighting and humanitarian effects for America through rapid and precise global air mobility.

Unexpected Blessing
June 21, 2011

Naomi and Ruth came together in less-than-ideal circumstances. To escape a famine in Israel, Naomi’s family moved to Moab. While living there, her two sons married Moabite women: Orpah and Ruth. Then Naomi’s husband and sons died. In that culture, women were dependent on men, which left the three widows in a predicament.

Word came to Naomi that the famine in Israel had ended, so she decided to make the long trek home. Orpah and Ruth started to go with her, but Naomi urged them to return home, saying, “The hand of the Lord has gone out against me!” (1:13).

Orpah went home, but Ruth continued, affirming her belief in Naomi’s God despite Naomi’s own fragile faith (1:15-18).

The story started in desperately unpleasant circumstances: famine, death, and despair (1:1-5). It changed direction due to undeserved kindnesses: Ruth to Naomi (1:16-17; 2:11-12) and Boaz to Ruth (2:13-14).

It involved unlikely people: two widows (an aging Jew and a young Gentile) and Boaz, the son of a prostitute (Josh. 2:1; Matt. 1:5).

It depended on unexplainable intervention: Ruth just so “happened” to glean in the field of Boaz (2:3).

And it ended in unimaginable blessing: a baby who would be in the lineage of the Messiah (4:16-17).

God makes miracles out of what seems insignificant: fragile faith, a little kindness, and ordinary people.

In all the setbacks of your life as a believer,
God is plotting for your joy. —John Piper

Lauren, do you think you could get the mods to correct the spelling: it’s Delaware, not Deleware.

Dover also has the Armed Forces Mortuary. This is where the soldiers killed in a ction all come to be prepared for burial and for shipment to their families across the country.

I live about 45 minutes south of Dover, and Route 1 passes right by the base. We see the big transports coming in and leaving all the time.

I always wonder if there is a soldier on board who is coming home for the last time.

The Mortuary staff are consummate professionals. The HBO movie “Taking Chance” with Kevin Bacon details what happens at Dover.

Also, the Air Force Mobility Museum is a gem, and it is free. In addition to all of the USAF transports on display from the late 1940s onward, inside is a B-17G and a C-47(DC-3). The C-47 is decked out in D-Day markings.

Great place for the kids—young and old.

Thanks for highlighting my corner of the world.

Well....

It all started last week, when a friend of mine gave me an old Spanish guitar with no strings, and a broken nut(the small ivory piece at the top of the neck which holds the strings in place), and lots of scratches in the wood. After carefully removing the shattered nut, and managing to untangle the old oxidized strings and remove them from the old-fashioned tuning pegs, I spent hours lovingly sanding the wood to get rid of the scratches. When I finally achieved a soft patina, I ventured forth to purchase new nylon strings and either a bone or plastic nut to finish the project. I have three Electrics and a steel-string acoustic guitar, but this would be my first nylon string “classical” guitar.

The first Music store I shopped had strings, but the nuts were all for electric guitars and were thus the wrong size and shape for the classical guitar. Not only THAT, they came in bags or a DOZEN! As If!

So I bought the strings, and went to a Guitar store for a classical nylon string nut. This store didn’t have them either, but the proprietor offered to CARVE one out of bone for me for $50.00. Since I had paid nothing for the guitar, paying $50.00 for something less than an inch and a half long and a quarter inch wide did not appeal to me.

So I drove a few miles more to a music shop that did repairs in the premises. As I swept into the front door I asked the manager, “Do You Have Any NUTS?”.

He was a horn player, was not familiar with my use of the term, and became quite insulted. When I finally was able to explain to him what I meant, he referred me to the Luthier. (Guitar fixing guy).

The Luthier had buckets of nuts and we found one that would fit. I sped home with my prize, glued it into its proper place, and without even waiting for the glue to dry, strung it up, using all the proper guitar-knots and winding all the pegs in the right direction. It looked BEAUTIFUL.

I tuned it up, and played the first chord. It SUCKED!!!! The frets are too far apart and so there is NO intonation on the ‘instrument”! I checked the calibrations with a digital tuner. The frets were installed in what looks like the ratios on a BASS GUITAR, and this is a little short scale Spanish Guitar! The frets should be at least a mm closer together. Of course, once the first measurement is wrong, the mistake rises exponentially up the 21 frets.

There is no way to correct this, as the fret wires are inserted into grooves that have been cut into the fretboard.

It will make a nice wall decoration, or perhaps a weapon. (El Kabong Strikes again!)

Grrrrrrr.
