White House misses deadline for solar panels
By: Darius Dixon June 21, 2011 09:17 AM EDT
The official onset of summer signals the Obama administration's unmet deadline to install solar panels at the world's most famous address: 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.
Energy Secretary Steven Chu announced in October that after a nearly three-decade hiatus. the White House would once again have a solar water-heating system mounted on its roof, as well as photovoltaic cells.
Chu said the panels would be up by the end of this spring." Spring ended Monday, and the panels aren't there.
"The Energy Department remains on the path to complete the White House solar demonstration project," Ramamoorthy Ramesh, director of the agency's SunShot Initiative and Solar Energy Technologies Program, said in a statement. The DOE's SunShot Initiative aims at shaving down the cost of solar power by 75 percent by the end of the decade.
"[W]e look forward to sharing more information including additional details on the timing of this project after the competitive procurement process is completed," he added.
Ramesh's statement largely focused on the DOE's other investments in solar energy projects, including two conditional loan guarantees it offered last week to projects that would reduce the cost of processing silicon and manufacturing wafers for solar panels.
But 350.org founder and solar roof campaigner Bill McKibben didn't mince words over his disappointment in the DOE and Obama.
"This was a no-brainer," he said in a statement Monday. "Republicans couldn't filibuster it, the oil companies weren't fighting it, and it still didn't get done when they said it would.

Wasting a half million dollars just so the Republican president in 2012 can take them down.
Messing with the sun, in any form, goes against Obama’s Voodoo religion.
And now we start the third summer of recovery.< /s>
They won’t even show you the White House roof on Google Earth because the Secret Service has tactical defense positions and equipment up there. If Barry would remove them in order to install some solar panels to placate the environuts, then he truly is insane.
3 decade hiatus is nonsense -
Bush II did it - just without the fanfare and silliness.
Bush’s home inCrawford is a MODEL of energy and environmental efficiency.
If that does not dramatize the ineffectiveness of big government, I don’t know what will. Minus the red tape, a private company could have installed the system in a few weeks.
