RICHMOND, Va. (AP) - In the most significant change to U.S. cigarette packs in 25 years, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday released nine new warning labels that depict in graphic detail the negative health effects of tobacco use.

Among the images to appear on cigarette packs are rotting and diseased teeth and gums and a man with a tracheotomy smoking.

Also included among the labels are: the corpse of a smoker, diseased lungs, and a mother holding her baby with smoke swirling around them. They include phrases like "Smoking can kill you" and "Cigarettes cause cancer" and feature graphic images to convey the dangers of tobacco, which is responsible for about 443,000 deaths in the U.S. a year.

Watch it, children. Mommy government is watching and wringing her hands. It's for your own good.

And you can't use a pic of an aborted baby but these images have Mommy's approval.

What we REALLY need is graphic labels on government policies.

Those would save far more lives.

Well Gee Wally, mom is going to angry when finds out you put all sorts of disgusting pictures on her smokes.....

What’s next “pictures of clogged arteries” on the gallon of whole milk? People with extreme obesity on my package of hot dogs?

This all reeks of “New Thought” mental behavior modification. They are all treating us like Pavlov’s dogs instead of adults.

The regulatory arms of the federal government have Waaay too much power, what we need to do is split each regulatory agency 50 ways and let each state decide what to do.

I’ll never see them. I buy tobacco by the pound and roll my own (and no I don’t use those chemical laced tubes either).

How about pictures of cirrhotic livers on cases of beer?

Maybe pictures of gruesome wrecks on SUV sale stickers?

Where does it stop? They do this crap with cigarettes in the UK too. I’m not a cigarette smoker, but even I think this is too much.

It is RACIST to imply that the Detroit social justice experiment was a failure.

At least cigarette smokers should get to see the Osama Bin Laden pictures, since we now have a government mandate to view graphic images.

Oh can't do THAT! "Mommy" is worried about her "children' seeing such things. It might give them too much info....uh, I mean it might hurt their little psych's.

The goal of leftism is to reduce painful feelings of envy of neighbors. It's a success every time.

If I knew how to do it, I would market nice reusable cigarette packages that people could transfer their cigarettes into whenever they open a new pack and so be done with the depressing government labels.

In the most significant change to U.S. cigarette packs in 25 years, the Food and Drug Administration on Tuesday released nine new warning labels that depict in graphic detail the negative health effects of tobacco use.

If the government really cared about the negative health effects of tobacco use, they could simply ban the sale and possession, then arrest, jail and prosecute anyone they caught.

It worked really well with alcohol and it's working great with other illicit drugs. </sarcasm>

In a world where grotesque stuff is a national holiday and where Mexicans eat candy skulls and bones on the Day of the Dead, these images aren’t going to dissuade anyone from smoking.

Liberals are all about feeling good about themselves. This let’s them do that without having any affect on anything. Which is what usually happens when liberals have “a good idea”.

And what prevents the cigarette manufacturers from telling the FDA to pound sand? It’s a privately manufactured product sold to willing individuals - none of the government’s business.

The government has been eroding freedom and choices for a very long time.

"Government is not reason; it is not eloquence. It is force. And force, like fire, is a dangerous servant and a fearful master." George Washington
