Environmentalists push to keep U.S., others from oil drilling in Arctic

DUBLIN — Environmentalists are scuttling to courts to stop a modern-day gold rush at the top of the world, as the United States and four other countries scramble to stake claims to potentially vast oil riches under the frozen waters of the Arctic Sea.

Environmental activists such as Greenpeace are opposed to any resource extraction in the region.

“Greenpeace has been protesting on all Arctic ice drillings since 2000,” said Truls Gulowsen, program director of Greenpeace Nordic. “We believe it’s high time to put some bars on the industry’s push into the area. It’s too vulnerable, and there is no way to clean an oil spill out of ice.”

The U.S. Geological Survey (USGS) estimates that the Arctic region contains 90 billion barrels of oil, representing about 13 percent of the undiscovered petroleum in the world. The region could yield about $8.3 trillion in oil revenue at today’s prices.

Some oil experts say the oil fields off the Arctic coasts of the United States, Canada, Norway, Russia and Greenland, which is part of Denmark, could be more than double the USGS estimate.

Extracting the Arctic’s petroleum requires drilling operations unlike those in the Gulf of Mexico, where nearly 5 million barrels of oil spilled during three months in 2010 after an explosion on BP’s Deepwater Horizon rig. It was the biggest oil spill in the history of the industry, and its long-term environmental damage is still being assessed.

“We’re in a global situation where we’ve found more oil and coal than we can afford to burn from a climate point of view, so unconventional sources [of oil] need to be the first to stay in the ground. At the same time, the Arctic is supervulnerable,” Greenpeace’s Mr. Gulowsen said.

Greenpeace recently lost a legal battle with the Scottish oil-exportation company...

The same people, who spout such crap, will also be happy to tell you why you should worry about “peak oil”.

Exactly. Those people want energy to come from renewable sources which would probably only supply about 10% of demand.

Then they say there has to be far fewer people on Earth so Earth isn't destroyed but they are never the ones to volunteer to go first.

Even more on-target and more general purpose:

Environmentalists push to keep U.S., others from wealth creation

Putin is ex-KGB.
He was trained in dealing with “troublemakers”, and can probably arrange extended stays in the Artic for them.

Communist push to keep U.S., others from oil drilling in Arctic

Fixed it.

When 'enviro-mental-ists' care about unborn babies as much as they [claim they] care about 'the earth' then and only then shall I give a damn.

Sure there is. If it's on top of the ice, the oil will be so thick in winter one could scrape it up with bulldozers. Otherwise, blast a ring around the spill, boom it, wait for summer, and tow the berg to open water for it to melt.

I'll take my royalties by mail.

Interesting that it is done on the Alaskan North Slope during the winter all too often.

Greenpeace should be renamed “Redpeace” or “WatermelonPeace”, green on the outside, red on the inside.

They have taken such a far-left turn over the past couple decades that they are now the enemy of America’s economy. Gee, they sound just like Obama.

When America goes to hell in part because of these retards, it’ll be quite fun to see them try to explain themselves to millions of angry people.

It might even happen sooner, as it’s becoming more and more clear that the “green” movement is big on talk and short on delivery. People will only take so much when it comes to their living.

Seems closer. Maybe they should live without any petroleum derrived materials in their lives--and walk, row, or sail to where they're going.

Taken a Left turn?

Some of their seed money came from the KGB during the Cold War, who was hoping they could throw a monkey wrench into Western industry.

They've been leftist (Marxist) all along, they just quit soft-peddling it.

“Greenpeace has been protesting on all Arctic ice drillings since 2000,” said Truls Gulowsen, program director of Greenpeace Nordic. “

Putin: "Mr Truls Gulowsen meet the Russian Spetsnaz."
Truls: "Hello, nice to mee..."
Spetsnaz: 'Bam, bam, bam, bam, bam'
Putin: "Thank you men, now back to Chechnya. Have fun."

Greenpeace better think twice. Putin ain't a tree-hugger like Obama, or those euro-weenie push-overs

Though Obama is a better communist than Putin.
