What happens if the House doesn’t do the same?
“As usual, McCain is operating to achieve appearances, not substance.”
McCain must have dementia because he can’t remember barry wiping the floor with him two years ago.
Perhaps people recommending continued support for NATO in this Libyan situation are aware of the kind of acts by Gaddafi that are reported in this link. Hard to detect Brazilian mines being planted in civilian areas, for example.
The atrocities alone cannot supply a responsible rationale for military action. If they could, then that rationale would supply even greater support for “allied” action against the regime in Syria. But it doesn’t, apparently.
It - the atrocities - provide an excuse, a possibly good excuse, a moral excuse, but only a good and convenient excuse, and just convenient, and just hypocritical because that excuse is not backed by a rationale that is greater than that excuse and that can be applied where even greater atrocities are occurring.
The nations involved in this are posing for the world - look what we are doing for an oppressed group. Bah; they’re hypocrites and in it only because whatever they do Libya is no real threat to them. Hypocrites.
If their excuse was a true and consistent rationale, they would depose the dictators in Syria and the rulers in Sudan, without blinking. They go after Libya and not the others because they’re hypocrites. They have no true moral rationale. It’s convenient and they can carry it out with almost no threat to themselves. Hypocrites.
Thanks for the ping gleeaikin. This was an unknown to me. You found a confirmation of Brazil and mines. I will look for another confirmation. Great information, you did good.
I agree that Syria would also be a good candidate for humanitarian asistance. If the Israelis are smart they will provide some. Nevertheless, it is the nature of nations to act from self interest. Syria has a population of 22 million, and no oil. Libya has a population of 6.6 million (about the size of the city of Baghdad) and lots of oil. Despite the riches, economic opportunity for Libya rates Very Low, while Syria is rated as low. If you have limited financial resources and want to help people, it makes a lot more sense to help a Libyan uprising. In addition, Libya has 149 cell phone subscriptions per 110 people, while Syria only has 46/100. Thus Libyans have 3 times the communication resources among the young rebels.
