Roger Ebert responds to controversy over Twitter comment about Jackass star Ryan Dunn

Film critic Roger Ebert says admitted was 'probably too quick to tweet' when he posted a message about Jackass star Ryan Dunn, who died in a fiery car crash yesterday morning. The 69-year-old wrote that 'friends don't let jackasses drink and drive' shortly after the star's death prompting fury from Dunn's friends, including co-star Bam Magera.

Taking to his blog today, the 69-year-old, who has won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism, offered his condolences to Dunn's family and agreed his brazen statement were untimely.

'To begin with, I offer my sympathy to Ryan Dunn's family and friends, and to those of Zachary Hartwell, who also died in the crash,' he wrote.

(snip)

'I do know that nobody has any business driving on a public highway at 110 mph, as some estimated or fast enough, anyway, to leave a highway and fly through 40 yards of trees before crashing,' he wrote.

'That is especially true if the driver has had three shots and three beers. Two people were killed. What if the car had crashed into another car?'

Ebert's statement today comes after Jackass star Bam Margera was left outraged by his tweet.

I am in NO WAY an Ebert fan, but I wonder if the "righteous indignation" about his comments will endure after the toxicology reports are released.

I am willing to bet the guy was plastered to the gills, as some witnesses have indicated.

Ebert got it right the first time, as he usually does.

It’s kind of funny when a flaming liberal gets exposed for the pompous, judgmental, intolerant, insensitive ass that he is.

Dunn was probably under the influence, and Ebert’s comments may have been true. The problem with this, as in many other situations, is the fake apology to those “offended.” If Ebert wanted to offer condolences, he would have done so the first day. Waiting until a forced apology indicates insincerity.

Btw, I loved the Jackass and Viva La Bam series’, and Dunn was a pretty funny guy.

Finally, something I can agree with Ebert on and he takes it back.

Meh.

Ebert may be a liberal but he was right the first time in this case. Some jackass drives drunk, kills himself and another person at 110 MPH, and we’re supposed to feel sorry about that? Please. It’s a mercy he only killed himself and the person dumb enough to ride with him drunk. He could have easily killed more people, innocent people, with his dumb and selfish stunt.

No sympathy. Ebert shouldn’t feel like he has to apologize for what he said.

Yup, me too. It was so over the top you get de-sensitized after awhile. Like those Saw movies. Once you go thru movie 1, the rest of them look like Casablanca’.

I hate Ebert as much as obama, but he did not have to deliver a fake apology.

His BAC doesn’t matter that much. Everything we have seen makes it clear he went beyond the limits of real life physics.

He held his “I am immortal” 16-yo mentality into adulthood. And we may never know how many kids got hurt or even killed following his sick and stupid example.

Reality caught up with him and now his life is of no meaning but his death is an object lesson to youngsters (and, God help us all, “admirers”) — stupid dies when stupid does.

Whatever. Now start apologizing for your crappy reviews, Roger.

What's he doing tweeting anyway? Is there anybody in the world who thinks "Gee, I just can't get enough Roger Ebert. I wonder just exactly what he's thinking right now."?

You think they will get toxicology results from two charred carcasses?

Yes. The corpses were not completely incinerated; Ryan was identified by his tattoos.

According to the article at the following link, “Officials say the toxicology results for both men, which would help determine the role alcohol played in the crash, will be released in four to six weeks.”

I’m amazed that Ryan and the other Jackasses survived their often-dangerous and painful stunts.

The guy may have been drunk, or maybe he wasn’t. My first thought when I heard about the guy dying in a crash was to wonder if he was trying some stupid stunt for his jackass show. BUT, I did not react to that thought by cracking a joke about they guy’s death. Nor did I ASSUME that it was the case. To wonder about what else might have contributed to the accident is natural.

However, it takes a special kind of @$$hole to tweet jokes about somebody’s horrific death when he first hears about it. And this same @$$hole Ebert is the kind of liberal who deems himself morally superior to and far more sophisticated, intelligent, and sensitive than conservative troglodytes. Further, Ebert and his ilk often argue that those on the right are “insensitive” which just further illustrates his hypocrisy. Even if it turns out that he was “right” and the “jackass” was driving drunk, that does not make his tweet any less insensitive or inappropriate. It is very possible to be factually correct and still grossly inappropriate with one’s comments. Regardless of whether or not Dunn deserves any sympathy, Ebert should be embarrassed for making the comment that he made and he was right to apologize to Dunn’s family.

I am glad no innocent children were killed.

The guy should’ve never been on the road, and I do believe the bartender(s) who served him should be investigated...I do think it is irresponsible, and if the state where this happened has addressed it, possibly illegal to knowingly serve someone alcohol who is already intoxicated.

Normally, when you speak without thinking first, a couple people hear you make an ass out of yourself. With Twitter, the whole country gets to see you make an ass out of yourself.

Yup. The Jackass crew or half of them were stuntmen part-time and in an interview with Bam I read in Penthouse (don’t ask), they practiced the more dangerous stunts little by little. Same thing with motocross leader Travis Pastrana, you have to be insane and focused to do such things and if you don’t believe you’ll get out of the stunt alive, do not do it.

“who has won a Pulitzer Prize for criticism”

He won because the awards committee loved Ebert’s support for Michael Moore and his fictional “documentary” on Bush and Afghanistan.
