Reps. Frank and Paul: Let states legalize pot
Seattle Post Intelligencer ^ | June 22, 2011 | Joel Connelly

Posted on 06/22/2011 1:23:14 PM PDT by Second Amendment First

A bipartisan team of Reps. Barney Frank, D-Mass., and Ron Paul, R-Texas, will introduce federal legislation that would permit states to legalize, regulate, tax and control marijuana without federal interference.

The legislation will be unveiled Thursday by Frank, an outspoken liberal Democrat, and the libertarian Paul, who is running for the 2012 Republican presidential nomination.

The bill would limit the U.S. government role in marijuana enforcement to interdiction of cross-border or inter-state smuggling. Citizens would be able to legally grow, use or sell cannabis in states which have legalized the forbidden weed.

The legislation is the first bill to be introduced in Congress that would end federal marijuana prohibition.

In a preview of the legislation, the Marijuana Policy Project noted that last week marked the 40th Anniversary of when President Nixon declared that the federal government was at war with marijuana and other drugs.

Nixon had rejected recommendations by a presidential panel that the country move toward decriminalization and an education and treatment-based drug policy.

While they are at it, free all the non-violent prisoners who haven’t committed any crimes other than their personal drug use, especially if the drug was Marijuana.

all 12 of them

I always said I’d be happy to allow pot to be legalized...

...the day after health care financing is 100% privatized with Medicare and Medicaid completely ended.

Wow, you’re all over the place with accusations. I suppose William F. Buckley wasn’t a real conservative either.

Also, making cannabis a part of our culture would in time lead us to become more like the cannabis based region of the world.

Most of us do not like the effect that thousands of years of using cannabis has had on those stoner like peoples.

Actually I think decriminalization is a bit better route to take. Obviously impaired driving laws will still apply but a guy caught smoking a joint in public will only pay a small fine.

Total legalization for use on private property.

Do you want to have a serious discussion?

The libertarian side of me understands the argument. Indeed, I remember long ago being shocked when Bill Buckley first called for drugs to be legalized. I carefully read his arguments.

In the end, my problem is that you can't answer the qustion of who will be responsible, bear the costs of legalizing drugs. Ir do you think that we can OK MJ, but still ban the other stuff..have you seen what crack has done to entire cities? And yes, despite your sttempt at humor...the overwhelming majority of kids first got exposed to drugs via MJ use..

Amazing isn't it? S'posed to be small govt. types here. Yet, for more than a few, the moment they hear there is money somewhere they want to steal it for the pols. Sick.

I’d have to be stoned out of my gourd to vote for either one of them.

No. He wasn’t. Being pro-dope is not a conservative value.

But back to the point. You really want to hang your hat politically on Reps. Paul and Frank?

Really?

Do you expect us to believe the if the federal government left control of drugs to the states, the legislature and citizens of your state would legalize crack? And do you really expect us to believe the majority of kids managed to get their hands on marijuana before they were able to get their hands on cigarettes and alcohol?
