John McCain’s never-ending war (McCain calls for war to defend U.S. "values")
The Washington Post ^ | 2011-06-22 | George F. Will

Posted on 06/22/2011 7:36:10 PM PDT by rabscuttle385

Elevating the fallacy of the false alternative to a foreign policy, John McCain and a few others believe Republicans who oppose U.S. intervention in Libya’s civil war — and who think a decade of warfare in Afghanistan is enough — are isolationists. This is less a thought than a flight from thinking, which involves making sensible distinctions.

Last Sunday on ABC’s “This Week,” McCain warned that the GOP has always had “an isolation strain.” He calls it “the Pat Buchanan wing,” which he contrasts with “the Republican Party that has been willing to stand up for freedom for people all over the world.” Rather a lot turns on the meaning of “stand up for.”

Between wishing success to people fighting for freedom and sending in the Marines (or the drones), there is as much middle ground for temperate people as there is between Buchanan, a sort of come-home-America conservative, and McCain, a promiscuous interventionist. When asked his response to those, including Defense Secretary Robert Gates, who say there was no vital U.S. interest at stake when the Libya intervention began, McCain said: “Our interests are our values” and “our values are that we don’t want people needlessly slaughtered by the thousands,” as Moammar Gaddafi seemed to threaten to do, “if we can prevent such activity.” Under the McCain Doctrine, America’s military would have just begun to fight, and would never stop.

McCain still minces words (STILL) so he doesn't offend Zero.

He will dance around obama like a kangaroo to avoid saying the obvious,
Zero's choices will move us towards another Vietnam style loss...!

Hey. I’ve always been a proud member of the Pat Buchanan wing. Except on the matter of Israel, Pat’s correct just about always. As for McChurian, he’s bonkers.

Ditto’s on the FUJM! He keeps confusing who those “people” are. Get a clue JM the majority of “those people” would like to see every Christian and Jew in the world dead. When push comes to shove they will follow their Mullahs!

I realize that George Will has to write articles to earn a living, but why blame McCain? This "endless war", as George Will and those leftist bumper stickers call it, started after 9/11/01 under Bush, continuing under Obama. As far as I know, John McCain has never held a post in either administration, and apart from casting votes in the Senate and talking about it, has no direct involvement in war policy or strategy.

Now, as to Libya, I don't know if what's going on there has been properly explained, so I'll do that now. Obama was elated with how the so called "Arab Spring" began. Hosni Mubarek was forced out and a new era of Egyptian democracy began (not really, but it makes a nice story). So, when the natives got restless in Libya, Obama thought he could have an easy twofer. That didn't happen since Muammar Qaddafi doesn't rule at the sufferance of his military as did Mubarek. But now, Obama's reputation is on the line so he can't back down. It's a matter of pride. Needless to say, his fellaters in the media won't tell you that. That's why I'm here.

Can either one of those fools fully explain just WHO we are supporting and what the US interest is in supporting them?

There is an oddly bloodthirsty side to McCain. Doesn’t matter what the military action or intervention, McCain always wants more, bigger, deeper U.S. action. For a man who lived through the worst of war short of being killed, it’s truly strange that he wants to hurl U.S. troops everywhere almost willy nilly. I remember how vehemently he argued for “boots on the ground” during Clinton’s Balkans adventure. That’s when I came to thoroughly despise McCain. Thank God he never became president.

///
absolutely!!! there are the same idiots, who used to say were were fighting a war against “terror”, and then decided were weren’t even fighting against that.

...so, WHO are we fighting, and why?

= = =

and, how many people, did Quaddafi kill, confirmed before we starting bombing churches and kids in Libya?
as far as i can tell, NATO has killed a lot MORE, than Quaddafi did...
(a war that IS for oil (for Europe), and for the 3.7 billion Goldman-Sachs Gaddafi has invested with them...
be a shame if he died and they got to keep it...)

“we don’t want people needlessly slaughtered by the thousands,” as Moammar Gaddafi seemed to threaten to do,”
///
but as for defending US values, i didn’t see McCain or Obama shedding any tears for the hundreds of thousands killed in Sudan, over DECADES...
or for the Coptic Christians in Egypt, or the Buddhist teachers beheaded in Thailand...

they are worse than ordinary hypocrites. we need a new word for this...

McCain said more Americans must die so that the ones who’ve already died will not have died in vain........or something like that.

I’m no pacifist but this guy is a war monger. He loves these half assed wars that bleed America little by little

"they are worse than ordinary hypocrites. we need a new word for this..."

Politicians.

Don't forget, this is the same Obama who supported Ahmadinejad and the Ayatollahs when the Iranians wanted freedom, and who has nothing to say about the wholesale slaughter in Syria. It's like he's throwing darts at a map to decide where to fight.

He is worse than nuts.
He is a US Senator who is nuts.
Here is a video from 2009 of Juan leading a Senate team to Libya to meet Qadaffi to discuss strengthening ties of “mutual respect and friendship”

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HNfztA1i0ts
Note that McCain does a bow of obeisance to Qadaffi, just as he was taught by his NVA torturers. Another sign he is a mentally unbalanced man.

His personal valet the ambiguously male Linsey Graham, also bows to Qadaffi. The neurotic stupe from Maine (shame on them) Senator “pretty in pink” Susan Collins is ignored by Qadaffi who looks right past her. So later when she gets the chance, she drops Qadaffi a curtsy....!!!!!

And now the three amigos are all OOO-ra on obama ignoring his lawyers, thumbing his warty nose at Congress, and bombing the Libyan people with tens of millions in our high tech ordnance, making us and NATO look weaker and sillier every single day that Qadaffi survives in a tent.

and telling us “isolationists” to shut up so we don't “encourage” Qaddafi.

Folks, you couldn't make this up on the Twilght Zone.

I remember how vehemently he argued for “boots on the ground” during Clinton’s Balkans adventure. That’s when I came to thoroughly despise McCain.

I recall that, as well. And had the same reaction to it.

However, at the time, there was a logical explanation for McCain's actions: the Albanian lobby was a heavy contributor.

I've no idea what the motivation might be for his miserable logic these days.

Why would anybody take the old fart seriously, anymore? Aside from Lindsay Graham, that is (you gotta love the sancho Panza characterization).

The Republican Party dodged a bullet with McCain losing to Obama. Will they learn the lesson in 2012 and not put forth someone like him? The jury is still out.
