Upton: House Will Vote to Bring Back the Bulb
National Review ^ | June 22, 2011 | Henry Payne

The bulb is back.

House Energy and Commerce Committee Chairman Fred Upton (R.,Mich.) has finally agreed to support a bill this summer that means lights out on the looming 2012 ban on the incandescent light bulb. Upton himself co-sponsored 2007 legislation making light bulbs illegal, a ban that has become a symbol of bipartisan Big Government run amok.

Upton has come under increased pressure in recent weeks, sources say, after failing to follow up on a promise he made after assuming the committee chairmanship that he would hold hearings on reversing the ban. After months of paralysis — and with the ban just six months from going into effect on January 1 — outrage was building among his own Republican committee colleagues and conservative activists, including a national petition campaign, FreeOurLight.org, sponsored by the Competitive Enterprise Institute.

“Freedom Action’s Free Our Light campaign has demonstrated that there is widespread public opposition to the light bulb ban,” says Myron Ebell, Director of Freedom Action at CEI. “We’re pleased that Chairman Upton has seen the light and congratulate him on his decision. We look forward to the House passing the bill to repeal the ban and its eventual enactment later this year.”

After Upton scheduled hearings this week featuring rent-seeking corporate fat cats that stood to benefit from the ban, anger boiled over and the chairman agreed not only to cancel the hearings but to bring up a bill repealing the ban. A source tells the Michigan View that the bill will likely be brought up under “suspension,” which means no amendments will be allowed and passage requires a two-thirds majority.

I don’t care either way.

I’ll bootleg whatever they decide to make illegal. As far as the Commies in Washington are concerned we’re all criminals anyway - they just haven’t figured out what we’ve done yet.

I’ll sell the ones I’ve got stashed in the basement and make enough cash to start manufacturing them myself.

This could be the rebirth of an American industry.

“....and passage requires a two-thirds majority.”

So what’s that mean? It’ll fail and he can throw his arms up and say: Oh, well. I tried?

Lower than whale turds Fred Upton was going back on his word to undo the light bulb ban he he instigated. These snakes in DC hate the American people, they only cater to voters enough to keep their precious seats in Congress. Congress is addictive, just look at Anthony Weiner, it took dynamite to dislodge him

The curly bulb just isn’t ready for prime time yet, and banning the competition does not help it along. Dimmability is still in its infancy with these lamps. Breaking one while lit will release mercury vapor (a few cents’ worth of plastic encasement could ameliorate this problem but nobody does it). Many won’t start at prevailing winter temperatures. Some people hate their peculiar shades of light and find the light of incandescents far more congenial. And why can’t the blasted things be made or even assembled in America? Even one?

It’s time for a Constitutional Amendment on light bulbs so Congress can see the light.

But why even go to the extent to redesign the curly bulb when advances on LED technology has just released the first super brights that easily produce the lumens of a 100W incadescent? And that from an American company!

I wish I had saved the story.

I have dimmer switches in every room of my home. Only the ceiling fans do not have them. They are wonderful and I do not see why I should have to live without them. Non-dimming cheap Chinese twisty bulbs can rot! Upton too!

Either way I have enough bulbs stashed away to last until the sun explodes.

The common fluorescent tube had its fans long before anyone thought to package a miniature version of it in a case that could screw in where a normal light bulb used to go. I liked the Circline adapters which preceded that, and they are hard to find now.

By all means let every means of producing light from electricity compete in the market. High power LEDs are old hat, but cheap ones are not, today. Give research a reason to come up with cheaper ones and it probably will.

The difference in the article I saw is that these new LEDs would compete in cost with incadescents compared to lifespan once committed to production.

One of the best advancements in sports car racing since they don’t suffer the same problems from vibration. It used to be commonplace to be black flagged because the brake lights or tail lights quit working during a race because the vibration was too much for the little elements in the bulbs. It now has us finding new ways to improve the socket connections. Now we are seeing super brights powerful enough for the driving and headlights as well for the night races.
