World Bank President Robert Zoellick appeared at the ministers' side during the news conference to express his support for the new measures and the seriousness of price swings.
"We are not going to be able to stop food prices from going up and down, but we can smooth out the swings and we can protect the poor whether they are small farmers or consumers," he said.
One of the key aspects of the new accord is the Agricultural Market Information System that would stave off panic food speculation by making instantly available to all countries the state of world food stocks, production and consumption, Zoellick explained.
"What we saw when prices started to surge in 2008 was that the lack of information on stocks and availability can lead to panic in markets and panic is what leads to price hikes," said Zoellick. "Uncertainty leads to volatility."
The new "action plan on food price volatility and agriculture" also called for the institution of emergency food reserves to offset humanitarian crises.
Banks and international agencies were also urged to draw up risk management plans for developing countries financial tools to offset price fluctuations.

Even so, the heat wave, sometimes up to 106 Dg, is making everything wilt. It’s just awfull.
I’m not suprised that Jalepenos are doing well, they are suited for these conditions.
I’m betting the USA is going to be targeted as having a large portion of global supplies. When the have-nots get a good look at our production vs consumption, I dare say they will say we are eating too much, that we are indulging while the worlds children are starving.
And then, they’ll make sure and take everything we have. “They” being, the G20 member states - including our own potentate..

No rain here yet, over 300 days now.
Everyone can relax, I'm sure they don't mean that we should quit burning our food as a fuel... a very poor fuel that costs more in money and energy than it delivers.
I'm printing this article for my wife to read and then we will discuss ways to accelerate and increase our food stockpiling efforts. Things must be a lot worse than I thought for these yahoos to come out and say that they need to fix it.
You can still grow food in containers. There were two kids that invented a VERY SIMPLE system with the use of a small piece of pvc pipe and two buckets to grow a single plant, that requires very little water. I’d have to find the info, but unless you have buckets, or access to them, it would cost about $5 per plant in materials. It may or may not be worth your investment.
Leave it up to kids to think of something I couldn't see far enough into the future to think of! I can get the buckets and PVC and have a pretty handy husband. Can you find the info fairly easy? Or give me a good search term to use? Thanks!

Basically, one bucket sits in another, with a pvc pipe connecting the two. There is dirt in the top bucket, with water in the bottom bucket, and a plastic cover (White garbage bag works in hot climates, black in cooler climates), over the top. The water recycles itself, so very little water is used, and there is no weeding.
It’s an ingenious idea, and I wanted to try this year, but did not want to invest the money (Irrigation water is free in my lease), but it’s a sound principle, and can be as simple or as complex a system (they have videos that explain form simple to very complex), and automatic watering for every bucket/setup. I hope it helps, I am going to try one or two this year, just to get a beter feel for it, but it allows you to easily grow food on a concrete slab, or anywhere, without tilling any soil.

I built six global buckets this year, based on the link I found right here on FR. My tomatoes are doing great. No blossoms yet, but they’re all about 4 feet tall and just about ready to start.
It is very spooky...we hardly ever think of starvation affecting the United States. Heck we have fat poor people, but it is coming. The G-20 just assured it.

You've got that right! We have a drought going right now. In September it will be a full year without a drop of rain.
