Gov. Bev Perdue has vetoed a controversial proposal to require voters to show photo ID at the polls.
The right to choose our leaders is among the most precious freedoms we have both as Americans and North Carolinians. North Carolinians who are eligible to vote have a constitutionally guaranteed right to cast their ballots, and no one should put up obstacles to citizens exercising that right.
We must always be vigilant in protecting the integrity of our elections. But requiring every voter to present a government-issued photo ID is not the way to do it. This bill, as written, will unnecessarily and unfairly disenfranchise many eligible and legitimate voters. The legislature should pass a less extreme bill that allows for other forms of identification, such as those permitted under federal law.
There was a time in North Carolina history when the right to vote was enjoyed only by some citizens rather than by all. That time is past, and we should not revisit it.
Therefore, I veto this bill.

Disenfranchise ineligible voters that is. If you have time to register to vote, you have time to get photo ID.
Bye Bye Bev in the next election ...
Is Bev a D or an R?
Take a wil guess.
Beverly Eaves “Bev” Perdue (born January 14, 1947) is an American politician and member of the Democratic Party
Beverly Perdue, the democrat endorsed by Andy Griffith in 2008.
Yet these "disenfranchised" groups manage to fly, write checks, etc. with their photo ID, right?
This is only about protecting Bammie's illegitimate votes.
She is a D who raised states taxes but to suck up just dropped our tax by maybe 1 cent. She is a liberal witch from hell.
protecting the right to an illegal vote?
NC has more illegals than most because they have more Tyson facilities than most.
She rode in on the coat tails of Obama. The instructions to all of the new voters coming out for BO were to just mark off the straight party line box and that’s all you have to do. Ergo, Bev (I still say she reminds me of The Joker) Perdue was able to skate in to the Governor’s Mansion.
The GOP house and senate may be able to override the veto like they just did for planned parenthood funding.
What other kind of ID is she talking about? ID that you don’t have to prove your citizenship to get?
O Geez it never ends, it never ends, it never ends, it nev. .
Yes, OUR right to choose our leaders, not the right of some Mexican or European to choose our leaders. As it stands, it is very easy for a non-citizen to vote.
