Miniter: Hacked! When will we start to defend America's computers
Gazette ^ | June 23, 2011 | Richard Miniter

When the Stuxnet computer worm severely damaged Iran’s nuclear program, many Americans cheered. We should also fear cyberattacks coming at us.

The International Monetary Fund in Washington, D.C., was hacked this past week. The top suspect? China.

The week before, the White House. More than 100 senior Obama administration officials found that their private gmail accounts were targeted by China-based hackers, an administration spokesman told The Wall Street Journal.

The FBI and the Department of Homeland Security are investigating. The attacks have been traced to Jinan, home to China’s army cyberunit.

The various recent hacking attacks are not isolated events. Foreign hackers continue to hunt for government secrets and hope to crash financial computer networks.

Our enemies have wanted to wage cyberwar against our markets and our government for a long time.

Osama bin Laden bragged in 2001 that al-Qaida is “aware of the cracks in the Western financial system as they are aware of the lines in their own hands.” In February 2011, al-Qaida’s magazine Inspire repeated the threat to attack U.S. financial markets via computerized trades — leading the FBI to brief Wall Street firms about potential risks.

China has been linked to bevy of cyberattacks. The Pentagon defends against thousands of attacks per month against its servers. In March, European Union headquarters were hit on the eve of a major summit. The French finance ministry was penetrated that same month. Earlier this month, South Korea’s government servers — which provide Internet access for top officials — was hacked. Human-rights activists interested in China report similar attacks.

Hacked? More like an invitation to be Face Book buddies I'll bet.

Send China the bill for every attempted hack. Our debt would go down drastically.

yeah, I guess we need massive government intervention on the internets to keep us all safe in time for the election.

OK, I’m good with caning. After the cattle prods have been liberally applied. Maybe liberally is the wrong term, EFFECTIVELY and GENEROUSLY applied.

After the caning, then the Fire Ants. I have popcorn.

Here’s a radical idea, how about assembling an elite “Tiger Team” of our ablest freaks and geeks under NSA or DIA auspices to start hitting back hard?

Why do we let the Chinese take their potshots for free?

I’m no expert but seeing as their entire country runs on pirated software I’m willing to bet that they are far more vulnerable to cyberwarfare than we are.

Make em’ howl.

It would be pretty cool. I’ll bet many of our fourteen year-olds could do it.

The bad thing about hacking, is that it reveals capabilities.

Economic warfare will hurt them more than trading hacks. Bump the tariffs on their products based on the hacking activity.

If a 25% (Trump’s number) raise on “widgets” from China equals 1 billion dollars, they will find out quickly it doesn’t profit them.

We only become concerned when it happens to us (Personally).
When it happens to others it is funny or just “to bad”.

Same thing holds true when the guy down the street has his house broken into.
“At least it wasn’t our house”
“I didn’t even like the b@$tard. He probably deserved it.

My concern is that SPAM is getting out of hand.
Information given freely (or otherwise) not only is a real nuisance, it is an invasion of privacy.

But it isn’t important to you right now is it?

Just wait......

I’ve been hit with several crude but effective malware attacks which have a lot of “Chinglish” in the phony scare messages. I’m like, you know, what’s with that?

In order for that to work, the software has to know when it's pirated and when it's not. Otherwise, the reason the airplane's flight controls are not responding, or the reactor is melting, might never be known.

Seems to me the punishment should fit the ethnicity and crime. If it comes from a Muslim Country, cut off their hands. If it comes from a Communist Country, death.

Start removing the problem, one incident at a time.

Cooling bodies, rising smoke, you know the drill. EMP could stand a look, it has possibilities. We might, after a while, offer to let the Chinese back into the 21st century, by selling them capabilities one electron at a time.

After all, they understand mercantilism and cash-and-carry business models and all. They want to run a wealth-storage economy? OK, boys, store this! <Bzzzzzzztttttt****!>

</off crispy-crackling frying noises>

“Why do we let the Chinese take their potshots for free?”

IMO because these potshots allow our government to come up with reasons to clamp down on the Internet and the freedom of information it gives us.

The people chanting Power To the People in 1968 never dreamed that it would arrive and be used to undermine their efforts.
