‘This Was About Sex,’ Not Money (NM-Ex UNM Pres. jailed in sex ring)
The Albuquerque Journal ^ | June 24, 2011 | James Monteleone and Jeff Proctor

Posted on 06/24/2011 8:04:19 AM PDT by CedarDave

It wasn’t about the money for a pair of aging academics, police say, so much as it was about creating a place on the Internet for men and women to meet for sexual encounters without the prying eyes of law enforcement.

Call it a cyber version of “The Dating Game” in which the host doesn’t get paid.

Except the men were johns, the women were prostitutes, and the whole operation was a complex, online network of illegal activity.

The two aging academics were a pair of longtime university professors who, according to law enforcement, were online pimps operating and moderating an organization called “Southwest Companions” that arranged sex with prostitutes ranging in price from $200 to $10,000.

One of them was F. Chris Garcia, a 71-year-old former University of New Mexico president revered on campus and celebrated as one of its best-liked professors, administrators and researchers.

As a member of the elite “Hunt Club,” Garcia – known as BurquePops – recruited at least 20 women who were in New Mexico or willing to come to the state to join the ring, police said.

They say he also served as a moderator of the organization, responsible for quality control and shielding the site from law enforcement.

His boss, according to police, was David C. Flory, a 68-year-old physics professor at Fairleigh Dickinson University in New Jersey, who was arrested in Albuquerque earlier this week.

For Flory, Garcia and others who worked with the site, “this was about sex,” said Lt. William Roseman said.

“They are needing a site or a place where they can go to do this where they are safe,” he said.

There are thousands of people every day looking for sexual encounters.

Internet porn is rampant.

Now we have a bill before Congress to make the purchase of marijuana legal.

Is it time to make prostitution legal.

If run properly. licensed properly, health checks for the men and women prostitutes, a safe place to have sex, outside of a street corner or in a car? Privacy.
Isn’t prostitution better than picking up some drunken scumbag in a bar who gives it away? Isn’t it better to have prostitution than having your daughter putting out to a boyfriend who doesn’t know and doesn’t care about anything but getting his ash’s hauled?

These are the world’s oldest arguments—as old as the world’s oldest profession. As far as I know Nevada is the only state where prostitution is legal. How are they doing with it?

Murder has also been going on since the beginning, do you want to legalize murder too?

ABQ police have been cracking down on the drug-addicted disease-prone ho’s on Central Avenue just east of UNM, a really needed service to protect students and other city residents in the crime-ridden area.

This on the other hand seems to be a high-tech transaction between consenting adults with police intervention that comes close to violating privacy of individuals. You can deplore the “service” they perform as do many who condemn Nevada brothels, but the libertarian in me says its none of the government’s business.

Murder violates the rights of the individual being murdered. In this case you have two consenting adults. Even if money is involved, do you really want to equate it with murder?

The mind boggles at what the responsibility for "quality control" was...sampling the wares would be my guess...

rotfl

You gotta KNOW that King Bill got in on some of the "quality control" and definitely on the "shield from law enforcement" end.

I'd like to see your persuasive evidence that legalized, safe prostitution with health checks to stop STD's and identity checks to stop illegals and age checks to stop underage boys/girls/"providers" and yada yada, will actually, effectively reduce illegal prostitution and effectively curb STD's, trafficking/sex slavery, exploitation of minors, etc.

That's the argument, of course. But I have yet to see evidence.

I am entertaining the hypothesis that legalizing prostitution may turn like legalizing abortion: vastly increasing the behavior, while bringing to a halt any effective enforcement against the grossest abuses. Net result: the grossest abuses continue to flourish, in the midst of an accelerated breakdown of social constraint.

So: your evidence that legalizing would make things better? I'm listening.

You’re equating a crime against other individuals (in this case horrific killing of the unborn, exploitation of minors, sex trade with human trafficking of women) with activity between consenting adults.

Look at it from another perspective: Has the legal sale of alcohol stopped all instances of drunk driving or domestic abuse when one is drunk? Has the advent of licensed casino gambling or even lottery ticket sales stopped all gambling addiction? Have warnings on cigarette packaging stopped all those who smoke from lighting up? Has the ability to obtain prescription painkillers stopped their abuse? The answer to all of these is of course no. An argument can be made that from the viewpoint of social constraint, all of the above should be banned.

On the other hand, drunk drivers and domestic abusers are jailed; gamblers and prescription drug addicts hopefully receive intervention, especially because families are impacted by their addiction; smokers are finding places to light up more difficult. There are penalties for those that exceed legal boundaries, especially those that inflict harm on others, including mental as well as physical abuse. So such penalties would be and are imposed against those who engage in exploitation of minors, human sex trafficking and sex slavery

But those that drink in private, smoke indoors with no children present, gamble with their own money should be allowed to do so. So it can be argued that behavior between informed consenting adults, though it would be against the social mores of some or even many, be allowed.

“Now we have a bill before Congress to make the purchase of marijuana legal.

Is it time to make prostitution legal.”

Every once in a while there seems to be a “libertarian” argument on FR about the validity of prostitution. It is discouraging to me. Here are the reasons I think prostitution should remain illegal:

-It destroys kids.

Sex causes children. Even with perfectly used birth control, sex causes children. I know, I worked in a CPC for years, half my pregnant clients were using birth control of one type or another when they got pregnant.

The children produced by prostitute sex are either miscarried, aborted, or raised by a whore.

The results are death, death, and extreme duress often resulting in serious anti-social behavior. To have a whore for a mom is psychological devastation to a child.

Not to mention, no dad in the picture, ever. With all the accompanying societal destruction.

You can NOT have sex without consequences. God’s plan is for sex between two married people. It’s for our benefit, not our punishment.

-Additionally, it destroys men, bringing out their worst characteristics and destroying their best. A man is at his best when defending women and children, not destroying them. His narcissism is fed and he becomes just another guy looking out for number one. No love, no empathy, no manliness at all. A permanent juvenile.

-Further, honest women who marry and work hard are threatened constantly in their security by strippers and prostitutes. How valuable are they? What are they good for? When prostitution is held harmless, there is no place in society for a decent woman, unless she want to go out and be a man in some way. Her honorable place in a health society is undermined.

-Young girls are cheapened the more a society promotes prostitution. They see that their value as a human being is frequently limited to their sexual attractiveness, period.

-Sexually transmitted diseases increase the more prostitution and promiscuity there is. We may pretend there is no societal consequence to this, but that is really denying reality.

-Sympathy and justice for rape victims is more and more senseless. Is not a rape something the girl on the corner would submit to for $75? What is the big deal? Make it a misdemeanor. Pay no attention to the fact that rape victims are often psychologically destroyed for life.

-Finally, the female prostitutes are generally chewed up messes before they even start this up. Most of them are abuse survivors who are addicted to something. Not all, but most. Yes, they are adults, but they are adults dedicated to destroying themselves as thoroughly as possible. Many have to be literally enslaved to do this to themselves.

It pains me to have to line out these issues which I would think are easily observable to anyone who cares.

I don’t offer any persuasive evidence ,I just placed the subject out there for discussion.

Certainly things are working fine today, with pimps and under aged prostitutes, drugs, and disease.Prostitutes beaten and abused, Johns arrested, murphy games

If you are happy with the way prostitution is today, that’s cool with me.

Why change it?
