Islamophobia is back on the rise in the U.S. despite cautious optimism in 2008 that post-Sept. 11 anti-Muslim sentiments had begun to decline, according to a report released today by the University of California at Berkeley and a national Islamic rights group.
The authors of "Same Hate, New Target: Islamophobia and Its Impact in the United States 2009-10" found that Americans' favorable rating of Islam is only 30 percent -- down 10 percentage points from November 2001, according to a Pew Research Center study.
"Same Hate, New Target," which was co-sponsored by UC Berkeley's Center for Race and Gender and the Council on American-Islamic Relations, took a in-depth look at intolerant actions and discourse and provided recommendations for combating Islamophobia in the future.
"This report shows that Americans who embrace pluralism must act together to prevent Islamophobia from being accepted in mainstream society," CAIR national legislative director Corey Saylor said in a statement.
"Islamophobia is the new face of an old hate that has targeted minorities throughout our nation's history."
The groups defined Islamophobia as prejudice against or hatred of Islam and Muslims. After years of decline, it spiked after President Obama's 2009 inauguration, according to the report.
Report authors said political and community groups used Islam to attack the president, ..
"Many bigots are upset that we have a black president," one Muslim who formerly held public office told the report's authors.
"But because of the taboo associated with anti-black racism, they are constrained from openly expressing it. So they falsely declare Obama is a Muslim and feel comfortable denigrating him for that."
The report also described what it called the manufactured controversy surrounding the Park 51 Islamic Community Center in Manhattan, a 2010 ballot initiative in Oklahoma attacking Sharia, and Islamophobia in the 2010 election.

When 'Realities' Collide..
Berkeley is nowhere to be found.
The WORD for today is Islamognosis NOT Islamophobia.
Spread the WORD!!!!
Islam is not a race. It is a cult.
Phobia is defined as an “irrational fear”.
I don’t find anything irrational about a fear of Islam.
Gee! I wonder why?
Oh but Antisemitism is falling doncha know.... /sarc
It’s not a phobia if it is a RATIONAL fear based on FACT!!!!
I’m an Islamognostic
Why not survey the Muslim population and assess their hatred of Christianity? I’m sure it would be in the 90th percentile.
Their hatred of Jews, as well.
We are told that 90% of muslims are moderate muslims afraid of Islam due to its extreme values and understanding and following of the myth of Mohammad.
Actually, the majority of hate crimes are committed against Jews. And the majority of the perps of these hate crimes are Muslims. In fact, it might be accurate to say that most of the hate crimes in the country are committed by Muslims.
Just walk into any of these mom-n-pop grocery stores that have been taken over by Muzzie’s from another country and feel the ‘hate stare’
Blacks used to talk about this stare they would experience from white people- now I swear I know what they mean.
I wont even go into one anymore.
Yes, I AM AN ISLAMOPHOBE- THEY WANT TO KILL US- THEY EVEN SAID SO~!!!
What do they call fear of conservatives?
> The WORD for today is Islamognosis NOT Islamophobia.
Knowledge of Islam?
I prefer to use, Islamisia, which is the HATRED of Islam.
I am not ashamed to hate a violent, racist, hateful death cult that has spawned more than 17,000 violent terrorist attacks worldwide killing hundreds of thousands of people.
UC Berkeley co-sponsored report finds Berzerkleyphobia on the rise
Ok, let’s do a survey of liberals and/or college professors to determine how many have an unfavorable view of evangelical Christianity. And if the survey shows that only 30% of liberals have a favorable view of evangelical Christianity, shall we view them as bigots? These surveys always get the result they want by asking the questions they want and not asking other questions that will make THEM look bad.
abundant bullsh*t in above statement
prejudice against Blacks was real but mostly because they were poor and uneducated ... Americans have gone out of their way to make up for the slights and hurts with abundant opportunities (and let's not forget that most of the people doing the harm were uneducated also)
prejudice against Japanese Americans was a fear that cut to the core after Pearl Harbor ... two sides to this story but never inter innocent Americans
Muslims --> what we know
responsible for 9/11 and did not come out immediately to condem the terrorists
taught to lie to infidels (if you're not a Muslim, you're an infidel)
6 imans tried the airlines and passengers patience a few years back by pulling prayer rugs out on the floor... passengers went nuts... inappropriate Imans complained ... s pffft
Iman and his wife are attempting to put a Muslim Center near Ground Zero... not sure if this was dropped but totally obnoxious and hurtful
To the maggots a UC-Berkeley -- take your labels and stick em where the sun don't shine !!
Ah, to be a tenured Berkeley prof. It must be nice to do very little work for hundreds of thousands of dollars a year, and what little work you do is producing political puffery — the conclusion of which you wrote before you sent out the grad students to do your “research” for you — masquerading as scholarship.
To “know” them is to hate them.
