Legendary television actor Peter Falk, who was best known for his role as a squinty, rumpled detective in the hit series “Columbo,” has died at the age of 83.

Falk died Thursday night at his Beverly Hills home, according to a statement released by family friend Larry Larson.

A cause of death has not been released.

In 2008, his daughter Catherine Falk, said he had been suffering from Alzheimer’s disease and dementia.

Falk won four Emmys for his starring role in “Columbo,” a show on which he appeared in 69 episodes.

“Columbo” began its history in 1971 as part of the NBC Sunday Mystery Movie series, appearing every third week. “Columbo” became by far the most popular of the three mysteries, the others being “McCloud” and “McMillan and Wife.”

Actually a good read at Wiki! Some great quotes!

“I remember once in high school the umpire called me out at third base when I was sure I was safe. I got so mad I took out my glass eye, handed it to him and said, ‘Try this.’ I got such a laugh you wouldn’t believe.”

I saw a German movie (Wings of Desire?) in which he played himself, but the premise was that he, Peter Falk, was one of several angels who had come down to Earth to experience what it was like to sense the world through human senses. Good movie.

Of course, he also played the grandfather reading from the Never-Ending Story.

RIP - Peter Falk who was so brilliant in one of my all-time fav movies, “The Inlaws”. A few quotes by “Vince” (Falk) , the CIA agent.

“Serpentine, Shel, Serpentine!”

[after a wild car ride in NYC]
Sheldon: Did we hit the little boy on Sixth Avenue?
Vince Ricardo: No, we missed him by a good foot and a half.

Sheldon: You were involved in the Bay of Pigs?
Vince Ricardo: Involved? That was my idea.

[On working for the CIA]
Vince Ricardo: Are you interested in joining, Shel? The benefits are terrific. The trick is not to get killed. That’s really the key to the benefit program.

His characters were good, but a liberal non the less. I may appreciate some of his work, but as for his personal voting record it showed a bit too much liberalism for my tastes. But what else would one expect from Hollyweird?

Wish they would all follow Falk.

BTW: I no longer have dealings with a neighbor of mine because he told me that he voted for Obama and will do so again.

I told him I would vote for Palin if she ran!

He and I agreed not to piss each other off anymore!

IT MATTERS (in my mind) that you just might be a Commie/Marxists!

He played in two Neil Simon movies, Murder by Death and the Cheap Detective—two of the most hilarious films you’ll ever see.

As the Cheap Detective, he met with a particularly seedy character played by Dom DeLouise in some middle eastern club. The guy was known for dousing himself with bad cologne. Falk had the greatest line as he sat across from him, “Geez (fanning the air with his hands). How can you stand to be around yourself?”

Please tell me you don’t judge a man’s worth by his voting record.

For me, part of the measure of a man is his politics. So, sure, it's one of the factors that I personally use to evaluate an individual.

The link in the post to which you responded actually shows Peter Falk's contributions as opposed to his voting record. The fact that he parted with money to support anti-American leftists does degrade my estimation of him.

Nevertheless, I did enjoy his acting as Lt. Columbo.
