While 22-year-old Rory McIlroy was teeing up on June 16 during the first round of his historic victory at the U.S. Open, another drama was unfolding outside Congressional Country Club in Bethesda.
A Montgomery County inspector busted some kids for running a lemonade stand at which they were setting aside half the proceeds for pediatric cancer victims. The charge? No permit.
One of the dads involved got a $500 fine. After a TV stations tape of the bust went viral, the county backed off, canceled the fine and let the kids set up on a side street. The children decided to donate the entire take to cancer kids.
Although it ended well, the incident became news because it illustrates how bureaucrats can abuse power and bully citizens - even kids.
Along the same lines, many Americans were outraged upon seeing footage in April of a Transportation Security Administration (TSA) agent patting down a 6-year-old girl at the New Orleans airport and of an 8-year-old boy being patted down in Oregon's Portland International Airport.
But wait. TSA topped that in Kansas City, where agents patted down an 8-month-old baby on May 7 after the infants stroller caused the scanner to beep. A pastor, Jacob Jester, who was in line, snapped a photo and tweeted it.
What got into those agents? As far as I can see from the picture, the baby was not dressed in a black burqa with a suspicious bulge, nor maliciously brandishing a bottle or pacifier. Mr. Jester, who said he respects the TSA for trying to ensure everyones safety, commented, Im not out to embarrass the TSA. But I do believe there has to be a line drawn. I do not believe that an 8-month-old constitutes a security threat.

You vill need bunny permit to sell ze bunnies!
Nanny State PING!
So bureaucrat bullies stop children from Earning money, safely on a sidewalk, but children and adults who beg for money are tolerated just about everywhere.
I am particularly speaking of the people who walk up to cars stopped at traffic lights.
You need a positive rating from your boss, aka “We, the People,”, to continue to collect our taxes to fund your pay check?
In the time of financial austerity I think we have found multiple targets at the municipal, state, and Federal level for out right removal (people, supervisors, buildings, logos, and mention in any and all legal documents!
What we are seeing and will continue to see is the logical out come of “zero tolerance” coupled with the arrogance of bureaucratic empire building. For the worse example look to the various “czars” appointed by Obama and the liberal packing of various Federal regulatory boards.
It is past time to defund and abolish any and all such operations that aren't covered by Constitutional authority. I had originally thought to use the term “legal” but then realized that bureaucratic administrative, “It's perfect because we wrote it!”, paperwork would quickly be made legal.
IMHO this is job # 1 for the 2014 election cycle. The # 1 job for the 2012 election cycle has already been filled.
More proof that the govt is the enemy.
History affords us many instances of the ruin of states, by the prosecution of measures ill suited to the temper and genius of their people. The ordaining of laws in favor of one part of the nation, to the prejudice and oppression of another, is certainly the most erroneous and mistaken policy. An equal dispensation of protection, rights, privileges, and advantages, is what every part is entitled to, and ought to enjoy... These measures never fail to create great and violent jealousies and animosities between the people favored and the people oppressed; whence a total separation of affections, interests, political obligations, and all manner of connections, by which the whole state is weakened. Ben Franklin
why isn’t this “inspector” still scrubbing off the tar and feathers?
Remember, this is Montgomery County in vaunted Maryland, THE freak state. This is the hotbed of liberal insanity.
Thanks for the ping!
Perhaps everyone should have their cell phones out in airports videoing (or pretending to at least) everything that happens there. Make it clear to TSA that every move they make is being recorded and can be published on the net immediately.
