It's not unusual for the federal government to provoke widespread retching among its citizens, but it rarely does so intentionally. The new warning labels required on cigarette packs, however, have that goal. Designed to evoke disgust with smoking, they may also induce revulsion at excessive uses of power.
The old cigarette warnings inform consumers of straightforward facts, such as: "Smoking Causes Lung Cancer, Heart Disease, Emphysema, And May Complicate Pregnancy" and "Quitting Smoking Now Greatly Reduces Serious Risks to Your Health." Thanks in part to such labels, Americans today fully grasp that smoking is unsafe.
But the point of the new labels is not to ensure that potential and actual smokers understand the hazards of the habit and make an informed choice. The point is to get people to avoid cigarettes whether they want to or not.
The Food and Drug Administration finds it intolerable that despite all the efforts to stamp out smoking -- through tobacco taxes, advertising restrictions, educational campaigns and smoking bans -- nearly 50 million Americans continue to puff away. The hope is that repeated assaults with nauseating photos will kill the urge.
So anyone electing to smoke will have to run a gauntlet of horrors: a corpse, a diseased lung, rotting gums and a smoker exhaling through a tracheotomy hole.
All this is made possible thanks to legislation passed in 2009 and signed by President Barack Obama. If it sounds like the sort of bossy, intrusive, big-government approach championed by Democrats, it is. But it passed by overwhelming majorities in both houses, with most Senate Republicans in support.

The fight against ‘all that is indecent’ now pertains to tobacco, guns, food and religion, etc. in this topsy-turvy world.
“Gay Sex Education” is fun and appropriate...don’t you watch the Bravo network? PBS? /huge spewing sarc
Here’s a site that rates movies based upon smoking.
http://www.scenesmoking.org/frame.htm
It is gloriously upheld to squash tobacco scenes in movies, they are pushing for any movie with tobacco use to be rated-R
If you did the same sort of website for homosexuality - say SceneFags - it would be classified as a hate crime.
Nanny State PING!
And not-so-elegant ones for everyday use:
Thanks for the ping!
Yes. And I can see the government posting on those packs that if cigs are removed from the pack you will be fined!
To further decrease sales, theyre going to seize part of the package for a government controlled full color advertisement. At the same time, mandatory jail time is going in for those who smuggle cigarettes.
Im sure someone is already writing a enormous penalty for anyone caught with an unapproved cigarette transport device that excludes the mandated cigarette tax stamp and federal graphic.
In their spare time the same people are screaming for the legalization of pot and other drugs.
Those will double as 30.06 cartridge boxes. Those are nice. They only come in clear plastic from Midway. ;^)
The whole rated R if cigarette smoking is shown is so stupid. It would make shows like Dick Van Dyke and Gomer Pyle unsuitable “for the children”.
It was good looking before?
So you're saying it IS a good idea after all?
No ifs, ands or butts: FDA warning photos faked

They’ve do the same thing in other countries with the graphic images, they also create tv advertisements using actors in heavy make-up.
I find it amusing (Not) that the Government and NGO’s can play with their advertising like this and manufacturers are tied to the truth....and when they embellish they must state so in their ads.
“So anyone electing to smoke will have to run a gauntlet of horrors:”
Not those who roll their own. I suspect that this segment will grow, therefore reducing the gov revenue from tobacco taxes. Then they will have to make up that revenue somewhere.

Kind of like when Weiner was pushing for CEO’s found to be lying to the public to be jailed? Think Sarbanes-Oxley....
The Fed is filled with nothing buy lying hypocrits!
I was wondering about that guy with the staples in his chest. I didn’t realize it was supposed to be an autopsy photo. In a real autopsy, they use a “Y” shaped incision, and they sew it shut. They DON’T staple it. I guessed it was a post CABG image. But the propagandists just came up with a fake “scary” picture. Now I’m pissed off. The guberment complains about cigarette companies “lying” about their products, then turn around and lie to us with these photos.
Very interesting.
