Skip to comments.Tea Party Leaders Look to Bachmann, Paul and Perry (no support for Palin, boos for Romney)

Who is the Tea Party candidate for president?
If a gathering of about 100 Tea Party leaders in Washington on Monday gives any indication, its Representative Michele Bachmann (who just announced her candidacy), with Representative Ron Paul and Gov. Rick Perry vying for a close second (and probably edging her out on fervency of support).
Leaders from Tea Party groups in about 40 states gathered in the Washington offices of FreedomWorks, the libertarian advocacy group that cultivated the Tea Party movement.
A (completely unscientific) voice-vote straw poll of the (possibly unrepresentative) group, conducted by reporters, found almost no support and even a few groans for Sarah Palin; loud boos drowning out a handful of cheers for Mitt Romney; nays for Jon M. Huntsman Jr.; and support but dismissals that he cant win for Herman Cain.
On a voice-vote run-off (equally unscientific) among the apparent top three contenders, Mrs. Bachmann, a Minnesota Republican, seemed to do best among women in the room, while Mr. Perry did best among men, and Mr. Paul, also of Texas, did best among younger people in the room.
Loretta Malander, a Tea Party activist from Oak Hill, Va., praised Mrs. Bachmann much the way supporters of Ms. Palin described her in 2008: Shes one of us, she said.We can connect and relate with her in the way we were raised, our values. We feel like she understands Middle America. Shes not one of those elites who look down on us.

NYT = Divide and Conquer!
With her John Wayne gaffe earlier today, be prepared for the MSM to push her candidacy.
Think Palin and Perry need to have a talk.
Paul? RON Paul?
Truly our system is wonderful, allowing even fruitloop idiot kooks to run for office.
You don’t think this is going to go through the election process all forgotten do you?
There’s only one Tea Party leader’s opinion that matters here, and I think his is pretty clear.
I don’t like Perry at all. I really don’t.
I also don’t believe a single thing from the NY TIMES
Sorry, the NYTimes is not a credible news site.
Its so weird. Love Palin but do not feel the same for Bachmann at all. Can pinpoint just a feeling. Who are these folks that call themselves leaders of the tea party. How do folks poll tea party people? Do we have a T next to our cell phone acct or something?????
I sure like him a lot better than some of the other candidates, and oh yeah - ABO - anybody but Obama for 2012.
The Tea Party has no leaders. They just think they are.
They are going to push MB candidacy and if she makes it to the general election, they will destroy her. She is in way over her head and will not be able to stand up to Obama, his thugs and the media.
???? John Wayne gaffe?
I sympathize with the Tea Partiers but I am closer to being a Palinista. I think if Sarah was standing on those steps in the capitol, you would have seen a lot more than 100 people there.
Were they able to get their cheers out between puffs on their bongs?
His supporters are great...with all the weed they smoke, they’re really mellow.
“With her John Wayne gaffe earlier today, be prepared for the MSM to push her candidacy.”
I’m behind today - what was it?
