White House: 'Significant' debt deal possible (Dems propose $400-600 billion in new taxes)

WASHINGTON (AP) — The White House said Monday that a "significant" deal with Republicans on cutting government spending and raising the nation's debt limit is still possible, even as the administration hardened its stance on the need for increased tax revenue to be part of any agreement. President Barack Obama made his first direct foray into the deficit negotiations Monday. He met with Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid in the Oval Office for about 30 minutes Monday morning, and planned to meet with Republican Sen. Mitch McConnell in the early evening. White House spokesman Jay Carney said Obama's meeting with Reid was "constructive" and the president concluded that there are still opportunities for a deal to be reached. But he said the only way to achieve that objective would be to include tax increases or the elimination of tax breaks for big companies and wealthy individuals.

"It's the only way to get it done," Carney said. The White House has proposed raising about $600 billion in new tax revenue, including ending subsidies to oil and gas companies, an idea that failed in the Senate.

Dear Rats:

You pass your tax increase ideas in the Senate first, and THEN we can talk about how stupid-ass it is to kick the economy in the private parts like this and tell you - No. New. Taxes.

Jay, the Carney barker: You want a deal? Take taxes off the table or it’s “NO DEAL”.

You KNOW if they raise a half-trillion (!!) in taxes, they are going to figure out a way to spend every penny of it.

Pretty much.

We have to many eaters, not enough producers. Well past the time to cut spending, as it will mean riots and revolution.

I'm sure this would be a *big* help to the economy

Tax-cheat Timmy says it would, especially if we raise taxes on those big bad rich greedy small business owners that need to pony up and pay their fair share to keep big government going............./s

Come talk to me when every POS like Stanley Thornton is off the government dole. Until then, go F yourself Obama.

Stanley Thornton of Redding,Ca spends his days pretending that he is a baby, going so far as to wear diapers and even sleep in a man-sized crib. He also has a roommate that acts as a surrogate mother who even bottle feeds him.Stanley even built his own man-sized high chair. Even worse this man from Redding,Ca has been living off of welfare and disability benefits on the tax payers dollar for ten years now.

“If the republicans after saying that any tax increase will not be part of negotiations, to then agree to ANY tax increases....then as far as I am concerned they can all go the devil.”

The Obama administration is the one who has dug the hole.
NO DEAL if there are any tax hikes. NO DEAL.

“Looks like the DNC will win after all.”

That’s media spin for ya ... making the Dem losing position, the one that is GOING NOWHERE, sound like a great idea that everyone wants.

the Republicans need to make a simple request: Dems, pass your plan through the Senate. (hint: These bad ideas were already voted DOWN in the Senate.)

No new income taxes, but increase (or add) tariffs on outsourcing and on nations with high tariffs on us. We have to stop being the sugar daddy to other nations.

The White House has proposed raising about $600 billion in new tax revenue

If this is accurate, then it looks like the rat Usurper has thrown down. Will Boehner have the cojones to back up his words? McConnell?

McConnell meets with the kenyan tonight. It should take about thirty seconds, if he does what he says he will do.

They increase spending by a trillion dollars and then we have to pay higher taxes...The GOP will cave...this will turn out like Reagan in the 1980’s...they were going to increase taxes and cut spending...they never cut any spending...This out year stuff is crap..It never happens...

"I'm sure this would be a *big* help to the economy "

Someone has to come up with that solution. There is general agreement that the next generation will not be as well off as their parents. This is a serious problem.

An economic system which produces an ever increasing lower class is unsustainable in a voting democracy. This isn't Syria where the haves can crush the have-nots with military force. It needs to be addressed now or face the voting consequences.

If taxes need to be selectively raised until this downward spiral is reversed, then that is an alternative. Those that see taxes as fixed in stone should come up with that 'big' help.

Obama is trying to negotiate a mass GOP defeat at the polls in 2012. I hope he fails.
