Skip to comments.Media pretty excited over Bachmannís John Wayne gaffe in Iowa

Watch below courtesy of a YouTube account titled, no joke, BachmannLovesGacy. The gaffe: She claimed in an interview with Fox News that she shares the spirit of another famous Waterloo, Iowa, resident, John Wayne. But John Wayne never lived in Waterloo; John Wayne Gacy did, which means this is either (a) another sloppy factual error a la her claiming that Lexington and Concord are located in New Hampshire or (b) some sort of Freudian slip that proves she secretly identifies with lunatics or something. (Bachmann loves Gacy!) Her critics will insist theyre sticking to the first narrative but their read on Bachmann has always been that shes evil and/or nuts. See, e.g., Matt Taibbis long profile of Bachmann in Rolling Stone this month asserting that shes grandiose crazy, late-stage Kim Jong-Il crazy or Colbert King recently dismissing her as Barbie with fangs. Its embarrassing that she wouldnt know that the Duke lived in Winterset, Iowa, not Waterloo, given that shes been selling herself over the past few days as a proud Hawkeye, but no one will care in a day. Without the Gacy angle, though, to nudge along the shes nuts storyline, you probably wouldnt have heard of this; it would have been dismissed as her mixing up two town names that begin with W and that would have been it.
In fact, its even lamer than that. It turns out there is a Waterloo connection for John Wayne:
Bachmanns campaign pointed out to ABC News today that actor John Waynes parents did live in Waterloo, although the actor himself did not.
And a little internet research proves that point correct.

This will be Bachmann’s “Russia from my house”.
Let’s see, what’s the bigger gaffe - a presidential candidate mixing up the location of a movie star, or the President of the United States claiming that a dead soldier is really alive. Hmmmm, I wonder.
How about the CMOH posthumous gaffe?
Obama is the biggest gaffer of all-time.
She didn’t mix up a movie star’s location and Bachmann is from Waterloo.
That said, she REALLY needs to watch her step from here on out and stop with the stupid mistakes if she expects to be taken seriously.
How about a President delivering a speech in Austria and stating he doesn’t know how the term “wheeling and dealing” is said in Austrian.
Ha, I was going to ask which one of the 57 states she said this in!!!
John Wayne never lived in Waterloo, IA. Bachmann asserted that he did. It’s a mistake, albeit no big deal.
You don't suppose she will take Joe Biden on as a running mate considering, do you?
Do we even have journalists in the true meaning of the word anymore?
These people are a disgrace.
The point is, is that she has got to fire the asscrack that gave her that info to put in her speech. I wouldn’t let that person anywhere near my campaign again.
Incidentally, Palin did NOT say she could see Russia from her house . . . it was part of a comedy script for that jackass on SNL. She said she could see Russia from the Aleutian Islands, which is absolutely true . . . not from her house.
Yeah, here’s the video link since you seem to have forgotten:
This is merely a result of the real problem, which is candidates feeling like they have to suck up to Iowans.
Why Iowa is always the first state to vote is beyond me.
I will support the first candidate that has the balls to call for an end to the Iowa/New Hampshire two-step, rather than participating in it.
0bama: 1,000,000 and counting
Amen! Although I am not a big fan of MB, you are absolutely correc. She needs to not leave openings like that.
Forget knowing if someone’s alive....that idiot doesn’t even know what year it is.
