Correctional Officer Shot In Face In Serious Condition

PALATKA, Fla. -- A Bradford County Sheriff's Office correctional officer accidentally shot another correctional officer in the face Saturday evening, according to the Putnam County Sheriff's Office.

Deputies said Charles Hendrix was cleaning his Glock .40 caliber handgun at a Palatka home about 7:30 p.m. Deputies said the gun accidentally discharged, striking Lori Anne Jestes in the face.

Jestes was taken to Shands Hospital in Gainesville in serious condition.

Putnam County Sheriff Jeff Hardy assigned detectives from the Major Crimes Unit to the investigation, according to the Sheriff's Office.

Seriously? Cops used to do this with revolvers. It’s not a Glock thing.

Discharge while holstering due to poor training is a Glock thing. :P

...and remember that unloading a gun involves more than removing the magazine.

But, who the hell ever pulls the trigger of any gun, loaded or supposedly unloaded while it is pointed at an innocent’s face?

This is at the very least a case of negligence, and more likely a case of attempted murder.

In the early 70’s one of my brother’s-in-law, a deputy at the time, accidently shot a friend in the calf with his 357 while they were walking to his car. The night before he had unloaded the weapon, but that morning his brother, also a deputy, had reloaded the 357 without telling him.

Lots of cops have Glocks. That means most cop accidents will be Glocks. This is not a fault of Glock, just stats.

But...who cleans a gun with live ammo on the table, let alone in the chamber?

"Recommendation: Unload gun before cleaning."

I am always amazed by gun cleaning accidents. Whenever I unload one of my firearms, for cleaning or any reason, I always dump the mag, cycle the action to catch the one in the pipe, and then count the rounds. Cycle the action another time or two, then break it down. Call me paranoid.

With a Glock, you have to pull the trigger to remove the slide.

But seriously, who has a gun pointed at someone when pulling the trigger, even if you’re sure the gun is unloaded?

“Yup, another ‘gun cleaning accident’..”

That’s what I was thinking.

I know NOTHING about guns, but it is hard to think of the circumstance where a person CLEANING a gun could discharge that weapon into another person’s face.

Maybe their own face, OK, I could see that, but a second person?

My XD-40 is the same way, you have to pull the trigger. That always bugs me, but it is what it is.

I point the thing at the wall, which is brick on the outside, and do my thing. By that point I know there is nothing in there that will go bang.

You have to pull a Glock’s trigger in order to break the weapon down. That is why Glock’s have so many ND’s.

“Call me paranoid. “

I’m a smoker, pretty much always have been. I’m considered a little neurotic because before I leave the house I have to go around and actually put my hand in any recently used ashtrays.

My friend (now a former smoker) always kind of laughed at me for this.

Until the day the smoldering cigarette in her ashtray almost set her home on fire. Luckily her parents were in the house, smelled smoke, and called the Fire Department. Had nobody been home it might have been a real disaster. (And no, she did not stop smoking because of this incident.)

Better safe than sorry, it usually takes about 10 seconds.

Another idea ... I keep a 5-gallon bucket filled with sand on the floor next to the work bench for the same reason.

Wife would be really pissed about the wall

I just can't wrap my mind around the fact that he was cleaning a loaded pistol.

Drop the magazine, pull the slide back and look to make sure there's nothing in the pipe, point at the floor, even though you know it's empty, and pull trigger.

Who has ever handled pistols wouldn't do this?
I really mean how could you not do this knowing what a pistol can do?

I have yet to see a gun, any gun, accidentally discharge itself. Someone MUST pull or squeeze the trigger. Guns don’t go off by themselves. If the gun is being holstered, than take your freakin finger off the trigger, which it shouldn’t be held like that anyway. Finger goes on the trigger ONLY when you are ready to shoot at the target. In this case, the cop is an idiot... I would bet he is demoRAT and a union member.

Hopefully you've first removed the magazine & pulled the slide back & then looked in the empty barrel (facing away from you), before pointing the gun at the wall and "doing your thing". If you've done the first three check points, you don't have to worry about something going "bang".

Police have strained personal lives partly due to odd hours and greater contact with people of low morals.

I once stopped a car for high speed in a pool area safety zone and the pretty young girl driving blurted out "I don't want a ticket! Do you want to have relations?"

Just exactly what are the odds the gun being cleaned will be pointed directly at the other person in the room?

You’re right. I dated an officer who shared clearly the likes of people they contend with every day. Their home life and social life are all the more important to them for that reason.... and in his case very selective about who the people are he chooses to bring into his social life, as well as the friends and acquaintances selected.

“Cleaning” can also mean wiping the gun down after handling. Even if that is the case it should not be pointed at anyone in the process.
