Dumb poll ... of COURSE a public official (officiating in America to and for Americans) should ... MUST recite an affirmation occasionally.

No.

It’s a clear sign of which side they are on.

It’s a huge tell.

Down a bit to 91.7%.

If they refuse, then I'd like to know why and just what country they owe their allegiance to if it's not America.

If they won’t pledge their allegiance to the United States of America, they have no business being a public official. Personally I believe, they have no business living in America.

No, I don't. Perhaps they're just as pissed off as I am about the state of the country these days.

When the Government of the United States starts pledging allegiance to me then I'll pledge allegiance again.

No.

No issue at all. I have an issue with those who try to make others pledge loyalty oaths to prove that they are American enough, though.

The scummiest politician would slither up and recite the pledge. That doesn’t make them better. It just obscures their vile nature.

I have a problem with any American who refuses to recite the pledge allegiance or put their hand over their heart.

I have a problem with any American who refuses to recite the pledge allegiance or put their hand over their heart.

The placing of the hand over the heart during the playing of the National Anthem is a relatively new innovation; in my youth (spent entirely on military bases) it was unheard of. I don't know how it came into being, but it's completely illogical. One places his hand over his heart during the pledge as a symbol of fidelity to his pledge; such a gesture has no meaning in the context of the Anthem. I was taught by decent people (and not a few of them) to stand respectfully and face the flag during the Anthem, and I refuse to do otherwise.

Yes. I also have problems with people not swearing on a Bible. That will/can get you off Jury Duty here in California.

Badly-worded question. I don't have a problem if the Pledge is not part of the meeting agenda, but I have a BIG problem if it is recited and all do not participate.

The Pledge is anti-Tenth-Amendment propaganda written by a socialist.

According to Wikipedia, the hand over the heart for the Pledge was started by FDR in 1942. Here is an image of what they did before:

I wonder why they changed it. /s

Thought I’d check back in with this one, and it seems that decency is losing some ground:

Not sure. I think what matters is the work they were elected to do. 1.69% (1,060 votes)

Yes. Pledging allegiance to America, liberty and justice is the least they should do. 78.2% (49,033 votes)

No. The city council can get its business done without reciting the Pledge. 19.32% (12,112 votes)

Other (post comment). 0.8% (499 votes)

Total Votes: 62,704
