Casey Anthony Trial: George Anthony Says He Didn't Believe 'At That Time' His Daughter Killed Caylee
abcnews.go.com ^ | June 29, 2011 | By JESSICA HOPPER

Posted on 06/29/2011 9:02:08 AM PDT by Red Badger

George Anthony gave some of the most damning testimony in the murder trial of his daughter today, saying that Casey Anthony was the last one to see Caylee alive.

George Anthony also denied the prosecutor's claim that he had sexually abused Casey Anthony when she was a girl.

Casey Anthony is accused of murdering her daughter, 2-year-old Caylee, and could face the death penalty if convicted. Her defense team argues that the toddler accidentally drowned in the family pool and that George Anthony helped dispose of the body. They also claim that he sexually abused Casey Anthony and that she hid her daughter's death in the same manner that she hid the molestation.

In a testy exchange between George Anthony and his daughter's lawyer, Jose Baez, the lawyer asked him, "You know that sex with a child under the age of 12 is a life sentence, sir? ... You of course would never admit you molested your daughter, would you, sir?"

"Sir, I never would do anything like that to my daughter. I would never do anything to harm my daughter in that way," George Anthony shot back.

Baez snapped rhetorically, "Only in that way?"

Casey Anthony's Case Hurt By Her Father's Testimony?

George Anthony's testimony may have hurt his daughter's defense as Baez argued that George Anthony attempted to shift the focus of law enforcement to his daughter and that his experience as a former police officer helped him do it.

"Definitely something happened to Caylee, she's no longer with us and Casey was the last one I'd seen with her…one and one adds up to two no matter how you try to spin it," George Anthony said.

I am working from home today and watching the trial — this is one of the strangest directs I have ever seen.

I was a little surprised the judge let this in, but I just don’t think it is getting the traction the defense thought it would...

Defense made a sad mistake accusing the grandad of molestation and cover up, sounds like the next mistake was putting him back on the stand.

The defense is claiming that happened, not the prosecution.

The judge let the state cross on the suicide note and contents because Baez made the HUGE mistake alluding to on direct to start with- Baez is way too inexperienced for this defense and the prosecution is having a field day.

The state can now shoe the state of mind when George attempted suicide was NOT that of a father guilty over incest, or helping cover up his granddaughter’s accidental death- but slowly and finally realizing that his own daughter had killed Caylee.

“George Anthony Says He Didn’t Believe ‘At That Time’ His Daughter Killed Caylee.”

More correctly - He didn’t want to believe.

What father is prepared to accept the fact that his daughter murdered her baby, his granddaughter, in cold blood?

It’s perfectly understandable that he went through a stage of denial. He had to go through a process of acceptance to consciously admit what his subconscious knew to be the truth.

Now the murderess and her defense team are throwing Mom, Dad, everyone, under the bus in their attempt to create enough doubt to save her from the death penalty.

>>Baez is way too inexperienced for this defense and the prosecution is having a field day.<<

I used this quote the other day in a different context, but it applies: “when your enemy is making a mistake, do not stop him.”

I am watching this and shaking my head and asking “just wth is the Defense thinking?” Their witness and their implied arguments are KILLING themselves.

If this was wrestling, it would be a reverse-suplex!

As I said — the strangest direct on a Defense case Ihave ever seen. Better to leave her Dad and all the implications his testimony brings off the stand completely.

Baez is so out of his league. He screwed the pooch so badly with his defense that it will take Casey on the stand to pull his case out of the dumpster. He took a defendant that might have avoided Ole Sparky but with his silly “molest/drowned” defense he took away any sympathy for a very unsympathetic defendant. Oh well, Casey will have a good appeal based on ineffective counsel.

Was a litigator for almost 30 years. You can’t ask what he thinks now as it goes to the substantive issue in the case that is in the purview of the jury. You can only ask what he thought then if it is relevant as to actions taken.

F ABC. I have watched every minute of the trial this AM.
That psycho Bitch sat there stone face as her Father broke down on the stand. AND the JURY was watching.

NO spin can change the fact that this f-ing monster killed Caylee, ran around shacking up while the baby was decomposing in her trunk...THEN took that baby and threw her in a TRASH F*ing DUMP. Where roots were growing through her remains, Animals were feeding on her bones. One foot was missing. Mired under TS Fay flooding.

YEAH spin that ABC. A-holes.

He wants to pin him on something about the Gas Can. Also he nailed George today on why he did not Call 911 and report the 100% certainty of a Dead Body being in the car when he picked it up at impound. George is an ex-cop and should have known to treat the car as a crime scene. George told the impound Mgr. the car had been at Amscott three days before being towed. George had no way to know that unless he put it there. George was claiming Casey had been out of touch and missing for a week with the car??? The impound Mgr. Also said he smelled a dead body and then George claimed he did not tell the man about the car at Amscott 3 days. Something is fishy with George.

this is a ploy for a later appeal on the grounds that the defense was inadequate. Make no mistake, Baez is throwing spagetti but he has a back up plan

I find it unbelievable that someone could be soocruel as to not even want a decent brial for a innocent child. I truely believe that Caylee became a danger to her. Caylee was reach awareness and verbalizing. Casey KNEW it was just a matter of time before her LIES would be outted by Caylee. CAYLEE HAD to be eliminated.

Pure and simple. She has lied stolen and cheated all her life. She was not about to let a 2 1/2 yr old child bring her down.

Who’s idea was it to go the ‘i was molested’ route? Was that to try and introduce mitigating circumstances to avoid the death penalty? I wonder if he accepted her claims on this because he had no faith in his case?

Yeah he is sooooo cleaver that JP walked him right into a scenerio where the Suicide note and gun could be brought before the Jury. You mean THAT backup plan.

Baez is one of the most scummie and ignorant attorneys on earth.

CA is the Kaiser Souza of child murderers. An inmate at the jail had her child die in a drowning and grandfather found the child. THEY called 911.
Surprise Casey claims a drowning with grandpa.
Standard female murder claim daddy and brother molested me. BS.

The dynamics of that family flys in the face of that. George and Lee were non-persons in that house. Cindy and Casey ran things. When the Ants seperated. Casey did not want him bak in the house. This Bitch would have played the Abuse card THEN if it were true. Did she premeditate caylees murder yes. No one carries on the lie of a babysitter and JOB for over two years, and just suddenly decide to kill her child. She planned it. No doubt in my mind.

Motive! Old enough to talk about it. That is the best possible motive I heard yet. Brings Murder 1 as a possibility. But what do you think is up with the Gas Can? Beaz is all over it for some reason. I can not understand why. What in the world does that Gas Can have to do with anything?

“I wonder... this particular one grabbed the national media’s attention?”

IMHO, the entire case was odd/strange from the beginning. A missing child, an unknown babysitter, and then it got even weirder. The “dance” pictures that came out and the smell from the car. I guess it has all the aspects of a good novel: mystery, sex, dysfunctional family, unknown father of child, etc... I remember initially praying for the safe return of this little girl and then seeing the photos of her dancing, drunk Mother and thinking, “the child is dead”. Just a thought.

It’s really hard to understand what Baez is thinking- even as an inexperienced attorney I would have thought Cheney Mason would have had some sway within the team, but it almost seems as though Casey is calling the shots.

It’s bizzare at the least- and the judge had to supply Baez with a reason for the suicide coming in this morning- had to explain to Baez what HIS argument SHOULD be!! This lawyer is in so far over his head the judge has to assist him- just to try and be fair.

It’s all so sick and depressing. And they all 4 appear so damned normal...the whole family..until you get a glance inside ..

I agree. It is impossible to imagine what the heck Thanksgiving was like for them.

If I didn’t see/hear what was being said I would say the writers for L&O and CSI got together with extreme recreational drugs to write the craziest script imaginable.

The only rational voices have been the Prosecutor and the Judge (and he is a bit of a “L&O cast” character as we discussed earlier). But the witnesses...

That’s a good question- I ask myself that too. I live about 10 miles from the Anthony house- so I’m local- but it’s such an odd case anyway.

Among other things remains the probability that no one will ever know what really happened. Other reasons for fascination= 31 days of silence from Casey; what she was doing during that time; the remains found within 1/2 mile of her house; no one knows who Caylee’s father is...

Exactly! Proving that truth indeed is stranger than fiction.

Even when I’ve been home like today and can watch the trial sometimes I just have to hit mute or switch channels fast.

I wonder if Baez own mental health has been affected by this case- or more specifically- by being in daily contact with this sociopath for the last 3 years...and if it’s affected his ability to adequately represent her...

(Or I read too many mysteries!)
