A 6-month-old boy who was visiting with relatives in Chesterfield County died Wednesday afternoon after being bit by the family's longtime pet dog.

Police and paramedics were called about 1:40 p.m. to a home in the 4600 block of Overridge Drive for a report of an infant male being bitten by a dog, police said.

The child, who police said is related to the dog's owner, was taken to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where he died. The dog, a Dogo Argentino, was signed over to Chesterfield Animal Control.

Lt. Randy Horowitz said the animal had no history of being aggressive.

"The kids would walk up to her and scratch her ears and she was as gentle as could be..."

How many times do we hear this after something like this happens? We also hear it all the time from ignorant inbred dog owners who like to claim that their dog is somehow different from all other dogs.

Dogo argentino is a bully breed. They look exactly like a pit.

The Argentine Dogo is a pit bull on steroids. I had several as patients over the years and most are easily handled and obedient. One, however, was a nightmare. The dogs weighed between 130-190 pounds. Interestingly there is documented data that a dog very similar to the Dogo was used outside Andersonville Prison to track and catch Union POW’s that were trying to escape. The photographs of the dogs at Andersonville are eerily alike a Dogo.

I noticed the baby was left alone with the dog. Criminal negligence on the family’s part. Leaving a baby alone with a dog like that? They may as well have given the baby a loaded gun to play with.

What kind of an idiot parent allows their six month old that close to a strange dog?

What kind of an idiot dog owner allows a six month old child in their home that close to an unpredictable dog?

Any owner of a dog, any dog, that claims their dog would never bite, should be beaten.

Dogs have a distinct sense of hierarchy and will be submissive to those they believe higher then they, but they will doggy disciplined those they see below themselves.

That baby merely got doggy disciplined, unfortunantly.

that claims their dog would never bite...

I've got one that would never, ever bite. Bear in mind it looks something like this:

My son and his girlfriend (now ex) had a Presa Canario...raised it from a pup with two energetic kids,a girl and a boy. The dog was sweet as pie, played with the kids and loved them, never gave anyone a moment's concern, although he grew to be huge.
One day the boy,who was small for his age, went into the dog's kennel to play with him,as he had done many times before. The dog attacked the kid and my son promptly got rid of it.

Some things in a dog's genetic makeup are just there, and cannot be loved away.

I like how they put the dog’s breed in the headline.

The headline says the toddler was “bit” by the dog - but is that the whole truth here? The story says they found the baby with blood on its neck?

So what happened here? Did the dog bite the baby in the jugular? Did the baby die of blood loss? Or did this dog break the boy’s neck?

“bit” is too mild a word to describe what resulted in death.

Dogos are game hounds, bred to work in packs to bring down boars and pumas.
What they look like is irrelevant.

Simply making a correlation. I don’t believe dogs are inherently evil.

Dogs are not good or evil, they are who they are and goosd training can only mitigate their tendencies.

But those tendencies never go away.

You might enjoy this story. My bull mastiff bitch is a large girl and she hates having her nails clipped, so I pay our vet to have it done.
The procedure involves one of his more physical assistants using a sort of half-nelson on her—and her eyes are almost all white during the drill—while he scurries from front to back and side to side with his nail-clippers.
I was trying to be helpful by kibitizing while they worked ...
The assistant lost her grip, the good doctor jumped on—they were being very professiona, very serious and I slammed the floor with my palm and said, “She’s tapped out!” and they both broke up. We finally got that last toe-nail. I like my vet.

“What kind of an idiot dog owner allows a six month old child in their home that close to an unpredictable dog?”

ANY DOG. Their own dog. 6 months old BABY for crying out loud. I would be careful what PEOPLE got near a 6 month old.

Blame the SUV, blame the dog.

“I've got one that would never, ever bite. Bear in mind it looks something like this:”

I didn't see the sarc tag, so I assume you were serious. Let me correct you, ALL DOGS BITE. Ask mailmen, meter readers, plumbers, service techs, if a home owner has ever told them “don't worry he doesn't bite” just before he bit them.

Owners generally think THEIR dog won't bite. All dogs bite. Under the right conditions they will bite YOU! When dealing with small children, you can't take any chances. You can't trust the dog, you can't trust the kid.

That was the breed of dog that killed that woman in California.

You are so right.

We have a German Shepherd/Chow mix. It bites, no question.
People ask us if our dog bites and we say yes. Then for some reason they are suprised when they try and pet it and get bit.

We also have a Newfoundland. It is hard to imaging it would bite. BUT you never know. With small children I would be more worried about him knocking them over playing.
I would never leave even our sweet Newfie alone with a small child.

My guess is the dog got aggravated with the kid, grabbed it by the neck like it was correcting a mischievious puppy and gave it a shake. It would be easy for a dog that size to unintentionally break a 6 month olds neck that way.

Generally, I agree with you. But, I was serious about my golden. From experience, I can say she could be working on a marrow bone for an hour, and any stranger, including a 4 year old, could come up to her and take it away. Her reaction would be to lick you and wag until you gave it back, or hope you continue to play “bone” with her. Of course, she is not one of those marxist muslim terrorist canines.
