A 6-month-old boy who was visiting with relatives in Chesterfield County died Wednesday afternoon after being bit by the family's longtime pet dog.

Police and paramedics were called about 1:40 p.m. to a home in the 4600 block of Overridge Drive for a report of an infant male being bitten by a dog, police said.

The child, who police said is related to the dog's owner, was taken to VCU Medical Center in Richmond, where he died. The dog, a Dogo Argentino, was signed over to Chesterfield Animal Control.

Lt. Randy Horowitz said the animal had no history of being aggressive.

"The kids would walk up to her and scratch her ears and she was as gentle as could be..."

How many times do we hear this after something like this happens? We also hear it all the time from ignorant inbred dog owners who like to claim that their dog is somehow different from all other dogs.

Dogo argentino is a bully breed. They look exactly like a pit.

The Argentine Dogo is a pit bull on steroids. I had several as patients over the years and most are easily handled and obedient. One, however, was a nightmare. The dogs weighed between 130-190 pounds. Interestingly there is documented data that a dog very similar to the Dogo was used outside Andersonville Prison to track and catch Union POW’s that were trying to escape. The photographs of the dogs at Andersonville are eerily alike a Dogo.

I noticed the baby was left alone with the dog. Criminal negligence on the family’s part. Leaving a baby alone with a dog like that? They may as well have given the baby a loaded gun to play with.

What kind of an idiot parent allows their six month old that close to a strange dog?

What kind of an idiot dog owner allows a six month old child in their home that close to an unpredictable dog?

Any owner of a dog, any dog, that claims their dog would never bite, should be beaten.

Dogs have a distinct sense of hierarchy and will be submissive to those they believe higher then they, but they will doggy disciplined those they see below themselves.

That baby merely got doggy disciplined, unfortunantly.

I've got one that would never, ever bite. Bear in mind it looks something like this:

My son and his girlfriend (now ex) had a Presa Canario...raised it from a pup with two energetic kids,a girl and a boy. The dog was sweet as pie, played with the kids and loved them, never gave anyone a moment's concern, although he grew to be huge.
One day the boy,who was small for his age, went into the dog's kennel to play with him,as he had done many times before. The dog attacked the kid and my son promptly got rid of it.

Some things in a dog's genetic makeup are just there, and cannot be loved away.

I like how they put the dog’s breed in the headline.

The headline says the toddler was “bit” by the dog - but is that the whole truth here? The story says they found the baby with blood on its neck?

So what happened here? Did the dog bite the baby in the jugular? Did the baby die of blood loss? Or did this dog break the boy’s neck?

“bit” is too mild a word to describe what resulted in death.

Dogos are game hounds, bred to work in packs to bring down boars and pumas.
What they look like is irrelevant.

Simply making a correlation. I don’t believe dogs are inherently evil.

When I read this in the paper this morning I was a little put off by the neighbor’s response..”Something had to trigger the dog...”.

Dogs are not good or evil, they are who they are and goosd training can only mitigate their tendencies.

But those tendencies never go away.
