The health beef over barbecued meat
Los Angeles Times ^ | July 3, 2011 | Elena Conis

Meat on the grill is as much a part of the Fourth of July as fireworks and American flags. But it is also reputed to increase cancer risk in unsuspecting patriots, thanks in part to chemical compounds formed when meats containing muscle — including beef, pork, poultry and fish — are cooked at very high temperatures.

The class of chemicals known as heterocyclic amines, or HCAs for short, were first discovered in the 1970s by Japanese scientists, who noted that compounds in the charred parts of cooked fish and meat were capable of damaging cellular and bacterial DNA in test tube experiments.

How can anyone ever be prepared to die if they haven’t first lived?

I’m thinking the enjoyment and social aspects of cooking out have beneficial effects on the mind and spirit of men, and better physical health as a result. Only those who enjoy a life without fear can really be prepared to die someday knowing they have truly lived.

I can see God saying to multitudes of people on the other side of the river, “Why didn’t you enjoy life?”

By all means please don’t anyone live by my theology, but I think it’s sinful not to enjoy and share the pleasures God has blessed us with. What are you going to tell God when your time comes - that he should be happy you added a year or two to your life?

The people I remember and admire (many Freepers) are the ones who enjoy today.

Alas, things are so bad that people are dying now who had never died before. The only way to deal with this horrendous problem is to stop doing everything we enjoy. Then we won’t live forever, but it will seem that way.

Of course! Everything on earth causes cancer! Sadly, my mother has bought into every damn lie about food causing cancer. She is 87 and has been living on fat-free yogurt and argula (yuck!) for 50 years. Naturally, she’s one of the most unhappiest people I’ve ever met.

How can anyone ever be prepared to die if they haven’t first lived?

For everything there is a season, and a time for every matter under heaven:
a time to be born, and a time to die;
a time to plant, and a time to pluck up what is planted;
a time to kill, and a time to heal;
a time to break down, and a time to build up;
a time to weep, and a time to laugh;
a time to mourn, and a time to dance;
a time to cast away stones, and a time to gather stones together;
a time to embrace, and a time to refrain from embracing;
a time to seek, and a time to lose;
a time to keep, and a time to cast away;
a time to tear, and a time to sew;
a time to keep silence, and a time to speak;
a time to love, and a time to hate;
a time for war, and a time for peace

- Ecclesiastes 3:1-8

Before the microwave, before electricity, before the gas stove...how in the world did people cook meat? Wasn't it over an open flame? I guess that's why they are all dead from ingesting all those HCA's ! OMG, imagine all those people would be living now if they had just read this report.

Obviously Bigfoot never cooked meat at a campfire, or in his cave...and that is why he is still roaming around. /sarc (After all, one good rumor deserves another.)

Those are bacon chunks disguised as vegetables.

“Steak Tartare”

Google “cannibal sandwich”, a Wisconsin favorite, aina?

My version: Pump rye spread w/horseradish on one, Texas Pete on the other, 97% lean ground sirloin, white onion slice optional.

It’s like weight training for the the immune system.

I barbecue at least once a week, each week for over 48 years.

I guess it’s gonna kill me someday. It killed my uncle at 102....so they think.
