California college students are bracing for higher tuition bills and fewer courses and campus services under a new state budget that once again slashes spending on higher education.
The budget signed Thursday by Gov. Jerry Brown inflicts the latest blow to California's renowned higher education system, which has helped make the state an economic powerhouse and served as a model for other states and countries.

Federal loans are a primary cause of high tuition costs, which have risen at four times the rate of inflation for more than 30 years. Rather than eliminating waste, colleges simply say to students. “Here’s what it costs and here’s how you can go into debt.”
To put a finer point on it, the problem is that we have too many people investing in college degrees that give them no real earning potential.
I took out loans in my time and it was a good investment. I know there is a bias against debt on FR, but that doesn’t mean all college debt is bad. Ulltimately, peoples’ judgment is the problem, and that is what needs to be addressed.
And they would have to take it. They can't do anything of value in the real world.

Bingo, The typical college instructor teaches nine classroom hours a week. Cut their pay or increase the number of classroom hours.
The reason why higher education in California is collapsing is because of command and control socialism.
I am a product of California education and I will tell everybody here that none of it is managed rationally.
The system could save millions if they only allowed in qualified applicants and got rid of remedial education, got rid of all the Marxist, feminist, ethnic studies programs, and forced professors to work more than one course a quarter or semester. These one course a quarter professors are making six figure salaries and work only two days a week for half a year.
Plus, many university campuses look more like 4 star resorts than colleges.
I think if your average Joe Shmoe saw all the waste and liberal privileges that go on at public universities, they would riot in the streets.

No bias there much. I guess if Brown wants to cut the handouts, then he must be as evil as a pub.
The answer to question #1 is because the government keeps increasing aid to education and prices have to rise to absorb all available dollars.
The answer to question #2 is because the educrats do not live in a world of reality like you and I. If you train mechanical engineers to do jobs for industry which actually exist, then it is only fair to train angry lesbians to fill courtroom position which need to be created.
California is now truly getting it’s just deserts. I hope it stings like the rock salt of a shotgun wound on those theiving communist California state and local government goon parasites. I’m sick of them and their excuses, lying, and worse and budget cuts that sting is just what they deserve. Richly deserve! Comeuppance time N-word-Fornia!

I transferred to UC Berkeley from a Jr.College in 1949. I was on the G.I. Bill after WWII service. I was an out of state student. My charges were ,as I recall, $65.00 for student fees and $350.00 per nonresident per semester. Greatest gold mine strike in my life as UC was at the top in my field with great profs, many Nobel winners. It has been amazing to me as a resdent of California since that such a great university in a previously wealthy state has not been able to give its native children the benefits of a low cost education which I received.
Higher Education will be the next housing bubble and for roughly the same reasons. It became popular to believe everyone had to have a college degree, just as everyone had to own a house whether they could afford it or not, and the govt got involved in providing the loans to make sure they had one.
At some point Universities in America became businesses and ceased being educational. It's all about the money.
I agree with you, but I’m just saying that acknowledging this doesn’t mean taking educational loans out is a mistake for everyone.
I am a graduate in Mechanical Engineering from UC Berkeley and I hate the place.
It is a sham as an institution of higher learning. The professors in the College of
Engineering almost don’t teach. Instead, they hire Teaching Assistants (most of mine were from India) to run their classes while they draw down $500k a year and work on their pet research grants (more government money. Far from a wonderful system, the System of “Higher Education” in California is, like most of the rest of the country, a RAT ship for lazy liberals who have convinced other lazy liberals that they actually know something. Oh, and just so you know, I went there when Jerry the Fairy’s father was governor and it was (and still is) the same when one of my kids went there.

I know a person who teaches one class EVERY OTHER semester, and is paid 6 figures. He teaches art. He supposedly does ‘research’ (don’t know what that would entail in art) but mainly he runs a graphic arts business on the side and travels a lot.
They should just take more loans. By the time they come due the whole shootin match will have collapsed. Get any loan you can. You can pay it back with worthless Obamabucks.
I’m on board with that. An extremely capable, dedicated and/or gifted student taking on loans with a specific goal in mind makes total sense. But for a directionless kid who has no clue of what s/he wants to do makes no sense. The latter is better off working for a couple of years and trying to find focus and direction.
3 young people I know went thru the 4 year degree programs at good schools, because that was what was expected of them. They came out not knowing what they wanted to do, After 3-4 years they each had a calling to go in an entirely different direction from what their degrees had prepared them to do. They returned at 25-26 for further schooling in the areas they were attracted to. Whatever loans they may have taken for the 2nd phase of their educations was worth every last dime.

Nor do I, but in California we are extensively taxed in order to make a super low tuition for our UC system.
For our California students.
So now they take the extensive taxes AND keep raising the rates, what do you know, they are taking it out of both ends as usual.
1. The University of California supports giving in-state tuition breaks to illegal aliens.
2. The University of California keeps trying to punish the most qualified applicants by doing everything it can to get around the ban on affirmative action admissions.
3. A few years ago, UC-Berkeley Police Chief Victoria Harrison left with a lump sum $2.1-million retirement package only to be rehired for her old job at a higher salary. Despite supposed reforms, there are still hundreds of retirees who are double-dipping by working again for the University.
As a graduate of the University of California system, I say screw ‘em. The University has proven over and over again that it neither needs nor deserves the taxpayer’s money.
Cal State Fullerton and Fullerton Municipal are among my transcripts. It was a truly great system in the 70s.
