Amazon, Overstock thumb nose at California tax
San Francisco Chronicle ^ | 7/3/11 | Andrew S. Ross, Chronicle Columnist

So, I went online Friday looking to buy a copy of John Kenneth Galbraith's "The Affluent Society & Other Writings, 1952-1967." Thought it might be timely to revisit the Harvard economist's distinction between "private affluence" and "public squalor."

Barnes & Noble's website was selling it for $26.53. Total, which included California sales tax: $28.79. "Total Before Tax" at Amazon.com: $26.40. "Estimated Tax To Be Collected: $0.00."

At Overstock.com, I could still buy furniture and various knickknacks free of the 7.25 percent tax, even though California's law mandating out-of-state Internet retailers to start collecting the taxes was now in effect.

In other words, screw you, California, and your laws.

"They're not intending to comply, by all indications," said Betty Yee, former chairwoman and current member of the state Board of Equalization, the agency charged with implementing the law. Friday evening, the board posted a "special notice clarifying the obligations of out-of-state retailers" on its website (sfg.ly/mh6SxF).

"So, we'll bill them at the end of this quarter, based on estimates either they provide or we come up from other data sources. Then, if they don't come forward and pay, we'll consider other courses of action."

That most likely means litigation, or, as Amazon and Overstock might see it, a game of "catch us if you can."

Did you even read what I was responding too? Here’s the quote “Most Californians are stupid. The smart ones moved out years ago.” So I’m stupid for staying and fighting? Your “Wow, assumptions much?” response seems to say this. Because you left the state, you gave up. I don’t blame you, some people just don’t have the will to fight.

CA was once a great state, a state that was a strong Republican. The cancerous east coast libs took over the big cities; the rural areas are still very strong Republican, unfortunately less populated.

So flame away because I’ve chosen to stay and put up a fight against the socialists here in CA.

“Why are you still there?”
I live in a great neighborhood with great schools. I’ve lived here most of my adult life after moving around a lot as a kid.

“Are not your taxes through the roof?”
Can’t out run sales tax, I purchased my house in the late Bush 1 era, so my property taxes are very low (thanks prop 13).

“Dont get caught in the sh thole when the balloon goes up.”
As long as we have RINO’s and Dem socialists there isn’t a place one could move to and avoid sh thole going up.

You continue to make a lot of assumptions based on your attitudes problems. Is there a mirror handy?

You know nothing about my business, my customers, my retirement situation or anything else and I can only guess that you have a lot of projection going on.

Either that or a lot of troll happening. TEA Party participant? Right!

I had the will to fight, and I fought to the point it almost KILLED me, but I also am smart enough to know it is a losing battle.

Stay and waste your time, California isn’t worth it anymore.

America is a much better place to live than the Socialist Republic of California.

You are wasting your time.

You may feel I’m wasting my time however I do not. When does one stop running away and actually fight for what you believe in? You can keep running, that’s your choice, it just then the Libs win and I don’t like Libs.

Thank you for your opinions and good luck to you.

But did I guess correctly or not?

You think I have the attitude problem?
ROTFLMAO!

Taxed Enough Already (TEA) party participants are not tax avoiders/cheaters by nature.

One would think a UCLA graduate could grasp that concept...

Congratulations. When I leave I want to have no ties to this state.
