[Texas] Rule requiring drivers to prove citizenship now law
Houston Chronicle ^ | July 4, 2011 | Jason Buch

As the House early last month debated a must-pass finance bill, one member slipped in language that puts into law a controversial Texas Department of Public Safety policy requiring driver's license applicants to show they're in the country legally.

The amendment, added by Rep. Jim Pitts, R-Waxahachie, to the education funding bill legislators needed to balance the state budget had originally been included in Senate Bill 9, the so-called "sanctuary cities" bill that failed in the special session. It also had appeared in an omnibus homeland security bill by Sen. Tommy Williams, R-The Woodlands, that died in the regular session.

The new law approved last Tuesday makes some tweaks to a 2008 DPS policy that prevents illegal immigrants from getting a driver's license and created a special license for temporary visitors. The rules require Texans applying for or renewing their license to show they are citizens or are in the country legally.

By putting it into law the state potentially undermines an ongoing lawsuit that argues DPS doesn't have authority to check legal status.

I'm glad you brought me back to this thread. I just went over the list and saw I have the same thread linked twice: The Philosophies of Illegal Immigration. I had a copy/paste issue when first adding that thread, and had to return to it to add it again. I had no idea both would appear. I think that's the first time in the 2+ years I've been doing this that this has happened. There always seem to be multiple threads linking to the same source, but this was my mistake. Sheesh...

"I REPEAT ..... The illegal problem is twice as bad as it was 10 years ago. ON PERRY'S WATCH."

But that is true throughout the entire U.S. - why do you see it as a failure on Perry's part and not as a national failure by the geniuses in D.C.?

I don't know much about Perry - I'm just trying to learn a little more.

Real ID originated at the 9-11 commission, Congress passed it in 2005 and at the time there wasn’t much controversy.

It was a real concern regarding getting all people’s licenses renewed as each one was going to have to go in and provide his/her papers. Texas was hiring people getting ready for the onslaught.

People maybe surprised now if they haven’t read the DPS requirements lately.

Besides Brewer, none of the other border state governors claim to be conservative. Southern states farther east than Texas are taking a more aggressive towards the hoard than Perry.

Until Perry takes the AZ approach, he has given it lip service at best.

Good, on to Sanctuary Cities in the next special session...

It's ain't goin' to happen. A number of large employers like HEB Grocery Chain and several others...raised hell over it so Straus shelved it. Guess they need illegals to boost they'll incomes.

Yea, I know it’s not going to happen. I just point it out to let people know where Perry stands on Open-Borders.

If Perry really wanted Sanctuary Cities to pass...it would pass...but if it didn’t he would CERTAINLY give the legislature another shot at it. After all, he gave them 3 shots at passing a new business tax, and was ultimately successful.

See I don't agree...Houston once was a sanctuary city...after the death of a popular HPD officer...it was changed.

It was large Texas based Companies that stopped this bill.

It wasn't Perry...

Once Perry calls the next Special Session, and the bill is killed again by the state legislature...I’ll agree with you.

Until then, I just have to believe that Perry is PERFECTLY HAPPY with not having to sign or veto Sanctuary Cities on two separate occasions.

So, I’ll be perfectly happy to eat my words, once Perry calls that next session.
