LOS ANGELES - Captain America will keep its patriotic full title in most of the world when the superhero adventure hits the big-screen.
Paramount Pictures and Marvel Studios gave distributors around the world the option of shortening the title of "Captain America: The First Avenger" to simply "The First Avenger," out of concern about anti-American sentiment.
But the only countries that took them up on it were Russia, Ukraine and South Korea.
In other territories, the movie will go out with the full title, a sign that the brand value of the Marvel Comics hero trumps any potential anti-U.S. feelings in some parts of the world.

Glad he gets to keep his name.
In the most recent Superman movie, they deleted the slogan “truth, justice, and the American way” so as not to offend the sensibilities of liberals. Officially, they said that “American way” doesn’t translate well in other languages. They officially were concerned about how it would be perceived in other parts of the world.
I wonder if they were concerned about how Brokeback would be perceived in other parts of the world.
Maybe it’s for the best. In the modern context, a movie called “Captain America” would star Seth Rogen as the aimable but shiftless loser who inherits a large fortune but manages to waste it away on partying, sleazy women and good drugs. Jack Black co-stars as Bucky.
I can see it with South Korea and Russia being as anti-American as they are but Ukraine doesn’t make a lot of sense.
No doubt; let them grown grain for Kim Il Jung.
Democrats are not going to like this.
That’s right. F. U. South Korea. Deal with Dear Leader’s nuclear missles yourself. Enjoy the gulags when he takes over.
What will it be called in Washington DC?
On the brighter side, most of the world really does like us and our comic book heroes.
Really. Name a folk hero from Russia. Or China. Or India.
I cannot and I am pretty well versed in cultures around the world.
But they all know Superman and Batman.
I wouldn’t necessarily jump to the conclusion that the decision to drop the Captain America part is a result of anti-US sentiment. I would likely be turned off by a title such as “Colonel Russia” or “Lieutenant Seoul”. What stake do I have in that? But a well marketed action flick without the “baggage” would probably fare better.
Russia I can see, but Ukraine? South Korea!!?? If their antipathy toward the U.S. is so high, they can garrison their own country.
My sentiments exactly !
Name a folk hero from China.
I’m thinking they might say 0bama
My cuz serves at Red Cloud in Sokor and just like any country, it’s the major cities like Seoul which are full of pricks.
But if you head to the neighboring smaller cities, they’re not as unfriendly as larger, metro cities.
But then again, the major feeling within the ranks (and this has been the same feeling for many years) is that OUR troops are there NOT to protect Sokor but...
...to checkmate China and Nokor. Japan by sea, Korea by land. We are just there to win the war. Ask anyone there about protecting Sokor, and the soldiers will just LOL. They know what the real mission is.
rename it “Captain Foreign Aid” and they’ve be crazy about it.
Yeah but he would be dressed like that little kitty girl....
Movie was OK. Definitely not a very patriotic movie if you ask me. Hell, his group of cohorts was made sure to include an Asian, an African American and a frenchie! LOL!! Tommy Lee Jones was the best part of the movie. Followed closely by the Shield.
The movie was awesome, and the “asian” was an American you stupid racist piece of trash. As was the black guy. You are a disgrace to this board.
Are you joking me a-hole??? Sorry, but in 1942 there was not going to be an ELITE American fighting force that contained this mix of characters and races. This was done for no reason other than political correctness. “Racist piece of trash”? HAHAH!!! And yes, the movie was boring, long and sorely lacking any real patriotic overtones.
