The quake appears to be near the Kermadec Trench, where the Pacific Plate is being subducted beneath the Indo-Australian plate.

To: U.S. West Coast, Alaska, and British Columbia coastal regions
From: NOAA/NWS/West Coast and Alaska Tsunami Warning Center
Subject: Tsunami Information Statement #1 issued 07/6/2011 at 12:13PM PDT

A strong earthquake has occurred, but a tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, or Alaska coast. NO tsunami warning, watch or advisory is in effect for these areas.

Based on the earthquake magnitude, location and historic tsunami records, a damaging tsunami IS NOT expected along the California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska coasts. At coastal locations which have experienced strong ground shaking, local tsunamis are possible due to underwater landslides.

At 12:03 PM Pacific Daylight Time on July 6, an earthquake with preliminary magnitude 7.8 occurred in the Kermadec Islands region, north of New Zealand . (Refer to the United States Geological Survey for official earthquake parameters.)

Pacific coastal regions outside California, Oregon, Washington, British Columbia, and Alaska should refer to the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center messages for information on the event.

This will be the only statement issued for this event by the West Coast/Alaska Tsunami Warning Center unless conditions warrant. See the WCATWC web site for basic tsunami information, safety rules, and a tsunami travel time map and table. (NOTE: Travel time maps and tables indicate forecasted times only, not that a wave was generated.)

USGS is now showing the depth at 1 km, which seems a bit unrealistic, although it does say the depth is “poorly constrained” at this point.

this is a computer generated automatic message. Current assessment is there are no warnings or watches in effect, even thought large and potentially shallow enough to have created one.

I could be wrong, but I think you’re misreading things. There is no Pacific-wide warning, but there *is* a tsunami warning in effect for Tonga and New Zealand.

EVALUATION

SEA LEVEL READINGS CONFIRM THAT A TSUNAMI WAS GENERATED. THIS
TSUNAMI MAY HAVE BEEN DESTRUCTIVE ALONG COASTLINES OF THE REGION
NEAR THE EARTHQUAKE EPICENTER. AUTHORITIES IN THE REGION SHOULD
TAKE APPROPRIATE ACTION IN RESPONSE TO THIS POSSIBILITY. THIS
CENTER WILL CONTINUE TO MONITOR SEA LEVEL GAUGES NEAREST THE
REGION AND REPORT IF ANY ADDITIONAL TSUNAMI WAVE ACTIVITY. THE
WARNING WILL NOT EXPAND TO OTHER AREAS OF THE PACIFIC UNLESS
ADDITIONAL DATA ARE RECEIVED TO WARRANT SUCH AN EXPANSION.

Not very big, but there none the less.

I'm just a rank amateur looking around at Google Maps, but the geography surrounding Raoul Island doesn't look conducive to a large tsunami. The ocean is relatively deep there, with a fairly steep rise to the island. It reminds me some of Diego Garcia, which, though right in line for the 2004 Boxing Day Tsunami, suffered zero damage and no tsunami. It just went right through/around. On the other hand, catastrophic damage was done in areas like Thailand with significant shallows and gentle underwater slopes rising to the coastline.

If my read is correct, New Zealand (including Auckland) would see a more significant tsunami from this. No way of knowing how much more significant (hopefully not much), and like I said the major disclaimer here is that I don't actually know what I'm doing, but that's my concern.

I guess we'll know soon enough; ETA in Auckland is two hours from now.

Yeah happened right after I posted that....lol

However the wave signature either suggests a much weaker main quake or we indeed just are seeing a forequake sequence. I have not seen it lowered yet at far as the magnitude so we shall see if that fault ruptures close by even larger.

Earth is shakin!

Below is my updated chart of worldwide magnitude 5+ earthquakes. The last column is projected for 2011 based on the first 6 months of 2011 data from USGS. Note that we've exceeded the past yearly average number of worldwide 5+ earthquakes (1,500) with a current count close to 1,600 at the halfway mark for 2011.

No scientific or logical basis for doing that. Also, first six months greatly skewed by Japan.

No scientific or logical basis for doing that.

I'm not sure I agree with you on the above, so let's just call it interesting. :)

As for your followup statement: "Also, first six months greatly skewed by Japan", I do agree to some extent. However, as you can see from the chart below, large earthquakes in the past did not significantly affect the normal cycle of 5+ earthquakes. So what is different this time?

This is not the one but it will illustrate still the point of the downturn over the last century of large earthquakes.

This one highlights total energy expenditure.
