America just keeps getting fatter
LA Times ^ | 7/7/11 | Melissa Healy

America continues to get fatter, according to a comprehensive new report on the nation's weight crisis. Statistics for 2008-2010 show that 16 states are experiencing steep increases in adult obesity, and none has seen a notable downturn in the last four years.

Meanwhile, cases of Type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure that health experts have long warned would result from the nation's broadening girth and sedentary ways are becoming increasingly widespread, according to the report, titled "F as in Fat," released Thursday.

Even Coloradans, long the nation's slimmest citizens, are gaining excess pounds. With an obese population of 19.8% — it is the only state with an adult obesity rate below 20% — Colorado remains the caboose on the nation's huffing, puffing train to fat land.

...

The report, prepared by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the Trust for America's Health, is their sixth annual state-by-state accounting of obesity.

In the last 15 years, the report said, adult obesity rates have doubled or nearly doubled in 17 states. Two decades ago, not a single state had an obesity rate above 15%. Now all states do.

"When you look at it year by year, the changes are incremental," said Jeffrey Levi, executive director of the Trust for America's Health. But if you back up a generation and look at the slow but steady climb of Americans' weight, he said, "you see how we got into this problem."

Getting out of it will not be simple, Levi said. The report emphasized the need for a range of measures, including boosting physical activity in schools, encouraging adults to get out and exercise, broadening access to affordable healthy foods and using "pricing strategies" to encourage Americans to make better food choices.

Is it good for you to eat ice cream and then go to bed?

This piece caught my eye as I was about to hang it up for the evening.

Bon appetit!

If watching weight (and calories) it’s best to consume the highest calorie meal at lunch.

IT doesn’t matter what time of the day you eat food, or what kind of food, as long as you are standing while eating it.

The best things I have found decent is not eating late at night, and not skipping breakfast.

But my radio keeps telling my that the "youth" in my county get their only meal of the day from the school lunch program and in the summer these little darlings are going hungry.

I'm confused, are they starving or obese? Sorry Libs, you can't have it both ways.

We’d all be a great deal better off if the press would worry a little more about low IQs and test scores, and little less about large waistlines.

Obesity remains a condition disproportionately affecting those with poor education and income, and closely tied to minority status. Among African American adults, obesity topped 40% in 15 states. Among Latinos, it topped 30% in 23 states.

In contrast, among white adults, obesity rates were higher than 30% in only four states, and in no state topped 32.1%.

This is another case where poor people cause problems for all. The high cost of health care is due to all those poor obese people. There's no reason for this. We keep paying higher taxes to help poor people and they get worse off. Stop killing these people with kindness. Put them to work. Get rid of illegal immigrants and put poor people in their jobs.

I am crowding 60 years old and haven’t had any serious (Praise the Lord) medical problems ever. I eat reasonably, work out at least 4x a week and don’t take any meds. I have maintained a weight of 185 lbs since I graduated from High School. I still enjoy my cigars, good beer and good Scotch. My father, on the other hand, decided that he wasn’t going to do anything in the way of a decent diet or exercise after the military discharged him in 1960. He passed away at the age of 50. The bottom line is that you are responsible for your own health and well-being.

Couldn’t possibly be that schitt they pass off as “food” now could it? GMO’s are soooo good for you....yeah that’s gotta be right cause the guvment says so. /s

Go to YouTube and watch the videos (11 short videos) called “Food, Inc.”. Nothing you eat is the same food that we ate when I was a kid. So called Diet soda puts more weight on you than non-diet ones according to a recent study. Aspertame (Splenda has it) was originally created as a pesticide. Sprinkle some on some ants and watch them die. lol

...stepping down off my soapbox now so I can go eat something.
