Obama expected to take 'executive action' on 'gun safety'

WASHINGTON (AP) - Six months after Rep. Gabrielle Giffords was shot, the White House is preparing to propose some new steps on gun safety, though they're likely to fall short of the bold measures activists would like to see.

Spokesman Jay Carney said that the new steps would be made public "in the near future." He didn't offer details, but people involved in talks at the Justice Department to craft the new measures said they expected to see something in the next several weeks. Whatever is proposed is not expected to involve legislation or take on major issues, like banning assault weapons, but could include executive action to strengthen the background check system or other steps.

"The president directed the attorney general to form working groups with key stakeholders to identify common-sense measures that would improve American safety and security while fully respecting Second Amendment rights," Carney said Thursday. "That process is well under way at the Department of Justice, with stakeholders on all sides working through these complex issues, and we expect to have some more specific announcements in the near future."

Anti-gun groups have been disappointed to see no action so far from President Barack Obama, who supported tough gun control measures earlier in his career but fell largely silent upon becoming president. Some activists were using the opportunity of the six-month anniversary of the Giffords shooting on Friday to speak up.

The shooting rampage in Tucson, Ariz., killed six people and wounded more than a dozen others, including Giffords. Two months later, Obama wrote an opinion piece in Giffords' local paper, the Arizona Daily Star, calling for "sound and effective steps" to keep guns out of the hands of criminals, including strengthening background checks. So far the president has done nothing and administration officials have signaled that no major steps should be expected, given the climate in Congress against gun legislation of any kind.

That's not stopping activists from pushing Obama. The group Mayors Against Illegal Guns, headed by Boston Mayor Thomas Menino and New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg, sent Obama a letter calling him to act.

"To prevent the next Tucson, we need a comprehensive background check system, which is what the president called for in April," said the director of the mayors' group, Mark Glaze. "That said, there are many steps the president can take on his own authority, without new laws, that could make a very real difference."

The group's suggestions included enforcing reporting laws that could have stopped the Tucson shooter from getting a weapon.

To what existing "reporting laws" is Bloomberg's group referring here?

It is past time to start impeachment proceedings against the President! I sent my lame congressman, Tim Scott(R-SC) and “Tea Party” favorite an email to encourage impeachment.

“Dear Representative Scott,

It is interesting to be queried on job creation, when the Congress of the United States holds the key in their hands. Stand up to this ego-maniacal President and refuse to raise the debt limit! President Obama has stated that he will most certainly ignore the Congress if this should happen, and then you can initiate impeachment proceedings against the President for violating the constitution and his oath of office. This will effectively end his socialist takeover of the country.

Once our country regains a sense of trust in our elected officials because of your bold actions, not only will you be a hero to the people, the manufacturing sector will bloom like a spring flower again!

You can believe that you will have my unwavering support for any bold action on your part that helps to deliver our Republic from the jaws of defeat.

Kindest Regards,”

Everyone needs to start bombarding his or her congress critter for impeachment of the POTUS and not stop until one of them initiates it.

If trampling the Constitution counts, and it does, the charges will be hard to beat.

"Congress has to counter the EO with enough votes to override a veto by Obastard."

Congress can also deal with an illegal Executive Order by passing a law that opposes, contradicts and negates the EO. Of course Barak Obastard could veto it, but the Congress could just keep on re-writing the language and sending it back to the Tyrant in Cheif, until the EO is exposed for the sham it is. The EO could also be challanged in the Courts. Executive Orders were not designed to over rule or circumvent the Legislative Branch. If something the Thug in Chief enacted through ANY means is unconstitutional, it should be fought against tooth and nail by the House and Senate Republicans, and should be hammered to death by the conservative talk show hosts, Fox News, and all other patriots, until it is overturned.

But something seems to be wrong with the House Republicans. Even though last November was a thorough thumping of Demorats at the Federal, State and local levels, due to a massive, (and growing), anti-Obastard sentiment, the Republicans are afraid to take him on. I'm beginning to understand why too. Obama and his machine out fox and out maneuver the mediocre Republicans at every turn, and they know it, and have become afraid of a fight with him now. This is why I like Trump so much, he attacked Barak Ocomunist so viciously and fearlessly that the American people adored him, and made him the Republican front runner even though he never threw his hat in the ring. Personally, I couldn't help but like the man, he possessed something our pussy Pubby leaders lack, brains and balls. And there is no replacement for brains and balls.

Do you think the GOP leadership has the stones to oppose “gun safety” named the Gabrielle Giffords Child Protection and Gun Safety Act?

heh

It looks like the Kenyan Kommie thug and his boys are about to trample our Second Amendment rights again. Oh well. Americans don’t care anymore anyway.

No, the Dems snuck that into the The Firearms Owner’s Protection Act of 1986 - the machine gun manufacturing ban was not done by E.O.

Trump would never have been a good candidate, and I really wonder if he was ever serious about it (he has a much better job now, being Donald Trump), but he did display an admirable quality lacking from most GOP candidates; he hit back, harder than he had been hit. It didn’t take long for those verbally attacking him to discover this.

Interesting how some people want to glom that up and say “Reagan did it, so Obama can too...”

Makes you think, doesn’t it?

Was it Bush and the china ban? I know there was one EO that’s pretty bad so far.

I’m just saying abuse of EO’s isn’t really new. Can’t just think ‘it won’t happen’ and that’s that.

I suspect there are more than enough votes to override a veto by Obama.

Are you sure he can even veto such a thing?

But we’ll still be able to get our “assault weapons” from the ATF? Right?
