Assault charges have been filed in connection with a violent confrontation in Houston caught on tape between a former West Point cadet and two people in singer Patti LaBelle's entourage.

It was Patti LaBelle's son, Zuri Edwards, who originally said he was the victim in this incident at Bush Intercontinental Airport, but Houston police are not buying that now. In court documents, Edwards is described as an instigator, while LaBelle's hairdresser and bodyguard are charged with assault.

http://www.khou.com/news/local/Patti-LaBelle-files-countersuit-against-former-West-Point-cadet-124671734.html

In the countersuit, LaBelle’s lawyers accuse King of being intoxicated, staggering around outside the terminal, screaming obscenities and trying to enter the singer’s limousine. King was politely asked to walk away from the vehicle, according to the countersuit. King’s attorneys have said the cadet had a few drinks on the flight to Houston but denied he was intoxicated.

“King directed profane and racial slurs towards LaBelle. When LaBelle’s son (Zuri Edwards) heard the profanity and racial epithets, he informed King that the woman in the limousine was his mother,” the suit said. “Without warning or provocation, King violently and deliberately punched Edwards in the face.”

It sounds like he has a good lawyer. Glad to read that the HPD is being investigated internally. What a miscarriage of justice.

Gee, think there might be a “hate crime” here?

FANTASTIC! Well, deserved charges.

Interesting that the two policeman who had their pictures taken with Patti LaBelle after the incident have also faced reprimands. I personally think they should have been fired for not keeping it professional.

She should have quietly settled this and worked towards making it right for this young man.

Instead, she had to lie AND use the race card.

I hope this young man wins 20 million dollars from her. That is, if she can even pay it.

IIRC, the cadet was talking on the cellphone when the luggage was deposited next to him. He didn't encroach on their "privileged" space, they encroached on his space.

And her music just ain't that good that her poop don't stink. Who does she think she is, John Kerry?

Finally some good news on this case! Thanks for posting this, RummyChick.

In light of these charges, I'm betting Fatti LaBelle's countersuit will be hastily dropped and her big fat pocketbook will be lightened by lots and lots of dollars. Now if only West Point would formally apologize for wronging this cadet. Maybe this part will help that along:

HPD told us that an internal affairs investigation into actions by police officers is continuing. Two officers were seen taking photographs with LaBelle inches away from King's blood.

I didn't believe LaBelle’s son's story from the git go, West Pointers have a code of conduct and they are honor bound to speak respectfully at all times. They take it seriously.

That is the real issue. I was astounded that he was kicked out of the Academy without much of a by your leave. Does not speak well of the Academy. I’m sure if the situation had turned out differently they would have been proud of their quick action.

— King and Zuri Edwards, LaBelle’s son and limo driver, exchanged words. Edwards was seen bumping King with his chest. King pushed away from Edwards.

The GREAT thing about criminal charges is that it makes a civil case a SLAM DUNK. Nice to see this upstanding American about to get an EXCELLENT wad of dough...so that his parents can spend their retirement in peace.

These people must not have realized the whole thing was recorded by a security camera.

Jut watch the video - case closed. This kid did nothing at all and was assaulted.

- Holmes and a woman (later identified as Harris) pushed King, causing him to fall back on a concrete pillar. A pool of blood could be seen on the pavement where King fell.

One of the assailants was really a woman.I will have to watch that video again.
