They are instead being ordered to just observe insurgents and record their position to reduce the risk of civilian casualties.

The controversial policy emerged at an inquest into the death of Sgt Peter Rayner, 34, a soldier from the 2nd Batallion The Duke of Lancaster's Regiment who was killed in October last year by an improvised explosive device as he led a patrol in Helmand Province, Afghanistan.

Wendy Rayner, 40, disclosed that in the days leading up to his death her husband been told that it was not his job to attack insurgents laying bombs.

Good point. When I learned about Morant’s history and the landing at Gallipoli, I learned that the troops always pay for staff bureaucratic stupidity.

Unfortunately our commander in chief appears to be Zapp Brannigan.

“Now, like all great plans, my strategy is so simple an idiot could have devised it. On my command all ships will line up and file directly into the alien death cannons, clogging them with wreckage.”

The people laying the IEDs are usually nobodies who are paid to do it, or farmers who are threatened into doing it, or Taliban nobodies at the bottom of the food chain. In any event, they are never important people. The theory is that it’s preferrable to snatch these guys up and get intel to find a way up the food chain. That’s grunt stuff for the US forces.

If these guys are observed by Marine snipers, however, they’re dead, period.

I don’t know what the Brits do, but you would think all the allied forces would be on the same page.

Another reason the Brits lost the colonies. We didn’t fight fair. We fought to win, and did.

You would have thought that after 225+ years, the Brits would learn how to fight to win.

Why do we sent our brave men and women into harms way without the intention of winning?

Because a high bodycount without winning the war helps Democrat/RINO politics move forward.

You didn't think it was an accident, did you?

"The existing policy of “courageous restraint” was led by the US General Stanley McChrystal 18 months ago and has been repeatedly criticized for leaving soldiers fighting “with one hand behind their backs”. "

A lot of people on here are quick to sing the praises of Gen. Stanley McC....I am not one of them.

I’m reading the posts at the Telegraph and blood pressure went up another notch.

“bromhead:

There is no doubt the rules of engagement are strict within the British Army. I remember being told we were allowed to shoot someone in the act of throwing a grenade at us, but not so once it has been thrown.”

Even the rules for sports aren’t this brainless.

This is a Specials Ops war...the IED planters may? have been under observation longer than the troops know...the commander in the air may need them alive to lead SF to the nest...one good possibility...weak I know, but possible!

there is the lessons of the American west. We drive the natives out, or to disarmed and supervised reservations, and release the Conestoga wagons, settling the place via an offer of freedom, low taxes, and honest self government. With low taxes and honest self government come high birth rates.
