WHEATLAND -- A Wheatland man shot and killed his three children and his brother, and shot and injured his wife Thursday evening.
Platte County law enforcement got the initial call of shots fired at 5:45 p.m. Thursday.
Wheatland Police officers and Platte County Sheriff's deputies responded to the 700 block of Oak Street, where they became involved in a brief standoff with Everett Conant III, who was born in 1975. His exact age was not available from police this morning.
Conant surrendered without incident and is in custody.
At a news conference this morning, Wheatland Police Chief Randy Chesser said Conant shot and killed his three juvenile sons; shot his brother, who later died at the Wheatland hospital; and shot his wife in the arm and foot.
Names and ages of all of the shooting victims were withheld by police pending notification of next of kin.
Conant's wife was taken to the Platte County Memorial Hospital in Wheatland and later moved to another facility. Chesser wouldn't say where she was taken when asked by media at the news conference.
A motive for the shooting was unclear, but is being investigated, Chesser said.
An initial court appearance for Conant is expected to be held this afternoon in Wheatland.
Information will be updated here at WyomingNews.com as warranted. More details will be in Saturday's newspaper.
The Grand Rapids shooter had the grace to off himself with his last shot.
Satan is hard at work, you’re right.
Was he on any medications?.
Maybe this guy also planned on doing that but something went wrong like maybe he ran out of bullets.
“Was he on medications?”
That will have to come out with the back-story. I wouldn’t doubt it, though — as we have learned there is usually some up-down oscillation psychopharmacology in these family-shooting equations.
It is also indicative of something (MAYBE) that the shooter’s younger brother was in the house with his wife.
I wouldn’t doubt that the guy’s surrender was a function of his having run out of ammo.
