Senator Dianne Feinstein, a California Democrat, said she has reached an agreement with two farm-state lawmakers to end ethanol subsidies July 31.
Feinstein's agreement with Senators Amy Klobuchar, a Minnesota Democrat, and John Thune, a South Dakota Republican, would end a 45-cent-a-gallon ethanol blender tax credit and a 54-cent-a-gallon tariff on ethanol imports that are scheduled to expire Dec. 31. The lawmakers said the proposal, announced today, would reduce the federal budget deficit by $1.33 billion.

While they’re at it, they should end the practice of pricing gasoline at X point 9 cents. For example, make it $3.50 rather than $3.499 per gallon.

Agree - I’d like to hear what Chuck Grassley has to say. Right now 24% of US corn is used to make ethanol and we are in pretty much full production mode. If the demand drops because ethanol is no longer competitive, what will the impact on farmers and corn prices be? Today the farmer gets paid about 4 cents for the corn that goes into a box of corn flakes, so anyone who tries to tay that corn ethanol has driven up food prices is practicing Obamanomics...
Another thing - there’s interest in using corn oil to make biodeisel - an industry that is floundering because cheap money allowed too many plants to be constructed without a viable feedstock. Last year Congress finally did extend the $1 per gallon biodiesel blending credit, so is this just a shell game, where they’re giving up a 45 cent credit for making ethanol in favor of a $1 credit for using the same feedstock to make biodiesel?
If they’re willing to do it, they know it will give them an avenue to spend the taxes used for the subsidies elsewhere for vote buying and also manage to further kick the taxpayers in the wallet.
They will! This has been in the works for some time, and didn’t pass in Jan, to give the companies time to prepare. They were previously promised the subsidy would not die until Jul. So the house felt bound to keep their promise.

I can’t tell you whether this is federal or state law, but a station owner in Florida told me that she was only allowed to sell alcohol free fuel to people driving cars built before 1988. If she sold to anybody else she’d be liable for a huge fine. She can sell alcohol free fuel if you put it in gas cans rather than your car. She keeps locks on the pumps with alcohol free gas. She also said that she must buy it from either Jacksonville or Mobile. A truck starts out from either place and fills tanks in roughly one station per county with alcohol free. You can’t mix alcohol free tanks/trucks with non-alcohol gas as the alcohol cleans the tanks and floats too much dirt and grime free and that clogs gas filters and causes cars to stall or run poorly. Alcohol also destroys natural rubber, which is why you can buy it for pre-’88 cars.
To get alcohol free gas will require probably both federal and state laws to change. Once they’ve changed the alcohol free marketplace will vanish as nobody who knows anything about what alcohol does to mileage or the car, tanks, filters and storage life gas wants to run alcohol containing gas.
All subsidies should be immediately canceled from ethanol, to soy oils, to limiting wheat production. People that have never farmed have gotten rich for generations off of the backs of the taxpayers of this country. If a product cannot be brought to market and produce a profit for its maker or grower, then let them find another product that will.

The EPA has approved or is about to approve a 15% ethanol blend. Expect your late model mileage to vary.

Yes, gas may go up temporarily, but wheat, corn, maisie, and many other crops currently screwed up by ethanol price fixing err, I mean subsidy will level out and fall

I was told that recreation gas, the gas at marinas, is also alcohol free.
