Is New Australian Face Veil Traffic Law a Sign of Anti-Muslim Bias?
The Blaze ^ | Madeleine Morgenstern

Muslim women would have to remove veils and show their faces to police on request or risk a prison sentence under proposed new laws in Australia’s most populous state that have drawn criticism as culturally insensitive.

A vigorous debate that the proposal has triggered reflects the cultural clashes being ignited by the growing influx of Muslim immigrants and the unease that visible symbols of Islam are causing in predominantly white Christian Australia since 1973 when the government relaxed its immigration policy. Critics say the bill smacks of anti-Muslim bias given how few women in Australia wear burqas. In a population of 23 million, only about 400,000 Australians are Muslim. Community advocates estimate that fewer than 2,000 women wear face veils, and it is likely that even a smaller percentage drives.

“It does seem to be very heavy handed, and there doesn’t seem to be a need,” said Australian Council for Civil Liberties spokesman David Bernie said. “It shows some cultural insensitivity.”

Under the law proposed by the government of New South Wales, a woman who defies police by refusing to remove her face veil could be sentenced to a year in prison and fined 5,500 Australian dollars ($5,900).

The bill – to be voted on by state parliament in August – has been condemned by civil libertarians and many Muslims as an overreaction to a traffic offense case involving a Muslim woman driver in a “niqab,” or a veil that reveals only the eyes.

The government says the law would require motorists and criminal suspects to remove any head coverings so that police can identify them.

I shudder to think of the political, social repercussions if/when this issue inevitably comes to pass here in the US.

The realm of the liberal, left-wing mind is a desolate, desperate wasteland. This is not about Islam, or women who wear veils. It's about those who would take to wearing veils to protect themselves in the facilitation of a crime who are the real targets of this proposed bill.

So what if it is. These people (adherents to a fanatical religion) have been shown to be terrorists. They have no standing in my book.

“The government says the law would require motorists and criminal suspects to remove any head coverings so that police can identify them.”

Looks like all people are subject to this in order to obtain proper identification. Muslims shouldn’t get special privileges.

Just asking the question indicates the brainwashing has taken root.

MUslims have PROVEN to be anti-everyone else. That isn’t “bias”.

Who cares if it is? The law has a right to know who is behind the curtain at a traffic stop. Besides I thought these women were not supposed to drive. (No I did not read the article.)

That was my first impression on reading the headline. I thought certain sects of islam prohibited women from driving.

It’s a false controversy, intended to sell publications. People with open eyes know banning the veil in some situations is socially beneficial.

You betcha!
Tomorrow I am going to walk into my bank wearing a mask and see how far I get.
I’ll get back to you. Maybe.

Yes, I’m sure it is, because only Moslems are expected to show their faces during a traffic stop or other LE encounter. The cops would never expect to check my face against my ID.

Yea, does this law apply to non-Muslim women who wear veils, or men who wear veils (regardless of religion).

If so, then it is NOT anti-Muslim.

“Yeah, I am biased against anyone who wants to kill me.”

I’ll help you with the above:

Try: “Yeah, I am biased against anyone whose religion tells them to kill me.”

Yeah I saw the video of this traffic stop and the muzzie was screaming at the top of her lungs that the cop was a racist! Technically, she was incorrect he was a bigot but whose watching. There was also a case where a muzzie man was in a burqa in Oz holding up stores with a gun. That’s what started this whole issue down under.

“a Muslim woman driver in a “niqab,” or a veil that reveals only the eyes. “

Personally, I think it would be more of a safety issue as a headcovering would impare your peripheral vision mightily thus endangering yourself and others especially at night.

Where’s that tiny violin so I can play a sad song for the Muzzies who are oh so discriminated against that they must actually obey the same laws as the rest of the world.
