A French minister said on Sunday it was time for Libya's rebels to negotiate with Muammar Gaddafi's government, but Washington said it stood firm in its belief that the Libyan leader cannot stay in power.
The diverging messages from two leading members of the Western coalition opposing Gaddafi hinted at the strain the alliance is under after more than three months of air strikes that have cost billions of dollars and failed to produce the swift outcome its backers had expected.
French Defense Minister Gerard Longuet signaled growing impatience with the progress of the conflict when he said the rebels should negotiate now with Gaddafi's government and not wait for his defeat.
The rebels have so far refused to hold talks as long as Gaddafi is still in power, a stance which before now none of NATO's major powers has publicly challenged.
"We have .... have asked them to speak to each other," Longuet, whose government has until now been among the most hawkish on Libya, said on French television station BFM TV.

Why am I not unhappy?
Why am I not unhappy?
Yes, the Moslem brotherhood is far worse.
It will be interesting to read the history of all of this; from 1969 until just a few years ago every leftist America hating person loved Kaddafi. They abandoned him. Why?
What now Barry?
Obama stepped on his Johnson———again.
This time he even angered his pal Calypso Louie Farrakhan.
Dumber than a box of rocks.
Me too. I’m rooting for the guy....We don’t know who these rebels are.
He’s going to be like Castro was after the Bay of Pigs.
Kaddafi has become an anti-Islamist in recent years. That’s why.
Perfidious Albion has now become perfidious NATO. They know zero won’t lose this war so they’re dumping it on the U.S. taxpayer. The French aren’t as stupid as we’d like to believe.
FRANCE SURRENDERS AGAIN
He went against Soro’s and the One World Order.
As much as I dislike Obama, I do not hope Gaddafi wins.If we are in a war even one like this without any vital national interest, I still favor victory. I hope Gaddafi ends up on the dumb end of a smart bomb.My issue is that we should not be in this war in the first place. That Obama defaulted to France’s leadership and their national interests. France is a terrible ally not to be trusted leading anything other than a white flag parade.
You are both right!
The price of oil is going to go up in Europe. I doubt that Gaddafi will make nice easily. I seriously suspect that he will nationalize all Europe’s oil company holdings in the country and extract a large price from them to continue the oil shipments to them rather than China.
Obama thrown under the bus my Sarkosy LoL
“It will be interesting to read the history of all of this; from 1969 until just a few years ago every leftist America hating person loved Kaddafi. They abandoned him. Why?”
Easy answer. Bush successfully turned Qaddafi into a U.S. asset during the recent war on terror. Qaddafi was an informant of ours in recent years, according to reports. Huma Abedin must have had a toe curling moment of sublime ecstasy when mostly U.S. forces in NATO proceeded to help the jihadists in attacking one of our own sources who was one of their turncoats, and one procured by Bush at that. Win/win/win/win/win for the globalist and jihadist amalgam that is the current left.
Conservatives are mad over the unconstitutional and unprovoked aggression (and ought be over the equally vile use of US forces as janisseries for the UN), while an important part of Obama’s Chicago base is enraged over the attack on Qaddafi who is their benefactor and ‘brother’. This is the event for which Obama should be impeached. His base is divided on the issue, Obama has seized the powers of a warlord rather than a commander in chief and it would also damage the Secretary of State and her busy little helper. Multiple wins for us . . . If their was a party to represent us in Congress.
