Fred Thompson, the former U.S. senator, Republican presidential candidate and actor (Law and Order, etc.), will be in Richmond next week to support an effort to ensure the presidency goes to the winner of the most overall popular votes in all 50 states.
Thompson, along with former Illinois governor Jim Edgar (R) and former Iowa governor Chet Culver (D) are part of a bipartisan coalition that has endorsed the National Popular Vote that would go into effect if states representing 270 electoral votes pass legislation.
The National Popular Vote bill has been signed into law in seven states — Maryland, Hawaii, Washington, Illinois, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Vermont and the District of Columbia -- representing 29 percent of the necessary votes for the compact to go into effect.

What little respect I had for Fred is completely gone now.
And to think some people here actually wanted this asshat to be president.
Wow, my respect for him just dropped by a big margin. The Electoral College ensures representation of the entire country, not just the election being controlled by a couple of high population centers.
I Supported Fred in his 2008 run and was disappointed. Unfortunately, this really does it!
The popular vote difference (which did NOT include all of the absentee ballots in every state and did not even include the contested 3,000 military ballots in Florida) in the 2000 election was 0.51%.
We would STILL be recounting the 2000 vote going county by county nationwide.
BAD method and Rats are guaranteed to stuff ballots in their dominant districts.
Right Fred, make it so only corrupt big city Democrats like Obama get elected President forever more.
Push through a capital offense charge for those caught stuffing ballots and I might be able to listen to the argument FOR this change.
As it stands, the media doesn’t care when some districts have over 100% of registered voters turning in ballots.
We'll briefly have democracy, which will be followed by mob rule and dictatorship.

Has Thompson gone senile on us? If we want radical ideas, how about going back to the proposal by our founding fathers that only property owners of good character can vote? I’ll take it one step farther, how about applying the rule that a person can vote once for every acre he owns. Therefore a person owning 100 acres can vote 100 times, and a renter cannot vote at all. Put that one forward and see how the city dwellers would feel.

We'd get flamed if we pointed out Fred's "Reaganesque true conservative record" in the U.S. Senate was 95% identical to McCain. And even more amazing, Fred's lifetime ACU rating was actually worse than his fellow Tennessee Senator at the time, Bill Frist, and the much hated Lindsey Graham. The only reason Fred couldn't get tied to "treasonous" RINO legislation like the 2007 amnesty bill and the Gang of 14 deal is he was no longer a Senator when those items came up. Had he still been in the Senate, I'm fairly certainly he would have voted with his "good friend John McCain" on those issues.

One of the central concepts upon which Thompson based his Presidential campaign was respect for “federalism”. Now he wants to destroy it. The irony is so thick you could cut it with a knife...

Same here. This pig has no understanding of our Republic. He has shown himself to be a true enemy of Liberty.
NPV will destroy another aspect of what has made our Republic prosper. Our Founders as a whole, were brilliant beyond words. Fred just pi**ed on their graves and our beloved Constitution. Fred deserves only our contempt.
