Fort Hood defense has few options

FORT WORTH -- More than two dozen soldiers have testified about the day they were shot in a crowded Fort Hood building in November 2009. Some told of looking the gunman in the eye as he fired. A Senate investigation has announced its findings about the suspect: Before the rampage, the Army psychiatrist had become an Islamic extremist and a "ticking time bomb."
Now the defense team for Maj. Nidal Hasan, who is charged with 13 counts of premeditated murder and 32 counts of attempted premeditated murder, faces what seems like an impossible task of preventing a conviction and potential death sentence in one of the highest profile cases in military history.
Hasan, 40, who remains jailed and was paralyzed after police shot him that day, could go to trial later this year at Fort Hood, the Army post about 125 miles south of Fort Worth. On Wednesday, Fort Hood's commander ordered Hasan to stand trial after reviewing documents from last fall's evidentiary hearing.
For the defense lawyers, "there are huge challenges in this case -- challenges that may not be present in other capital cases," said Richard Stevens, a military defense attorney who is not involved in the case.

Obama will not allow Hasan to get the Death Penalty. He will commute the sentence to life without parole.
Should have been hung already. Hung at the gates of Ft Hood and put on permanent display
They could save the taxpayers a LOT of money by ‘providing’ him with 50 Valiums a liter of Aristocrat Vodka.
I’ll even spring for the vodka.
Yep, I can imagine that the defense attorneys have major challenges in this case.
Hey, he will get his day in court. I hope Obama and Eric Holder are happy that we are living up to our highest ideals by giving this dude his fair trial.
I hear some of the Casey Anthony jurors are available.
I left out the ‘and’ again...
He killed fourteen persons.
Why is he not being charged with the murder of the unborn child of Francheska Velez?
Go up the chain of command and prosecute those who knew of his violent rhetoric yet kept him armed and in authority for politically correct reasons. And tally this as a domestic terrorist attack on Obama’s watch.
Fireing squad with porcine soaked bullets, let the pigs have him.
make it bacon flavored vodka and I’ll chip in
The AP writer dares to call Hasan a (gasp) “Islamic extremist?” Risky move there, girl.
Cheeee-it, they’re ALL “extremists” and shouldn’t be a one of ‘em in our U.S. military.
obama will probably pardon and reinstate him in the army...
I left out the and again...***
It’s alright, Wayne. I have some extra “ands” in my desk drawer and I used one of them to complete your sentence.
The PC idiots who allowed this to get to this point should be held accountable, too.
But we know that will never happen.
If you ever in need of a phrase, a word, an alphanumeric character, or perhaps just a minor punctuation mark in order to complete one of your posts, please do not hesitate to ask.
If Hasan is in pain....I hope he lives for 100 years...without any pain medication.
It is a shame he cannot be tried by a civilian court in Texas.
Outcome? not in doubt.
