Afghanistan: Karzai half-brother 'assassinated'
BBC ^ | 12 July 2011 | BBC

The half-brother of Afghan President Hamid Karzai has been killed in an assassination attempt, officials say.

Ahmad Wali Karzai, the younger half-brother of the Afghan president and leader of the Kandahar Provincial Council, was shot dead, presidential spokesmen Waheed Omar told the BBC.

Initial reports suggest he was shot by his bodyguard in his house in Kandahar.

A controversial politician, some saw him as a defender of Pashtun rights.

Critics said he was a warlord mired in corruption who was openly involved in the drugs trade and had a personal militia at his disposal.

The president repeatedly defended him, denouncing accusations that his brother was involved in criminal activities.

He was a staunch ally of US and allied forces in Afghanistan.

The body of Ahmad Wali Karzai, who was born in 1961, has been taken to a nearby hospital, says the BBC's Quentin Sommerville in Kabul.

International forces in Afghanistan have expressed shock at the killing. There has been no word yet from the Afghan president himself.

If it’s the one I’m thinking about, a man who profited off of death from both sides, including US soldiers, my response is-aaaaaaahhhhhhh!!!!!!!!

Wali was the major player in Kandahar, with a hand in everything. This will impact a lot of things in that area, to include aid projects and military ops.
That said it will be interesting to see what comes of this.

Well, there was a high-profile assassination in Afghanistan in 2001. Then there were 3,000 dead in the ashes of the World Trade Center.

This is probably a stupid question, but why would he have an Afghan body guard?

"Attempt", yet.

Note how they jump to conclusions. What I see is an "alleged attempt".

Email just in from Taliban re Karzai assasination:

“You Call him a “Shaheed”? Are you people out of your silly minds? AhmadWali Karzai was not just a Criminal, he was a real Shame for Afghanistan. He was the most brutual Warlord who killed many respected Tribal Leaders in the South, South East, West & in the East of Afghanistan. He was a murderer, a Criminal and thug who got richer at the expense of the poor people of Afghanistan. We highly advise you to not use such a clean and a pure name of “Shaheed” for such dogs. Justice has been done and justice will continue.”

I was about to copy and paste the exact same thing, what kind of writing is this? I’d say it was no attempt, it was successful.

They work a lot cheaper than Expats.
Now that I got that out of my system, it’s the norm for warlords/provincial governors and ministers to have locals -often Police - as bodyguards. A Peace Council member I meet with has two nephews who do the job. I hope for his sake they’re better than they look.

In this case the hitter may have been a relative, long time retainer, etc. who was bought by someone else. Hard to say. Or he may have been an infiltrator who was lucky and got close. He was also reportedly conventiently blown away on the spot. Maybe someone tying up a loose end?

According to some of the early reports, this was someone from his clan that he'd known for most of his life.

Then again, the Taliban are claiming that he's one of theirs.
