Rick Perry has “huge” opening, according to some in GOP establishment
Washington Post ^ | July 12, 2011 | Philip Rucker and Perry Bacon Jr.

.......The conventional wisdom has been that a sizeable portion of the party’s base wants to defeat Romney. Rather, the Republicans interviewed said, many in the party are satisfied with Romney but waiting to see if a stronger candidate emerges.

“People are for him in the same way they were for Bob Dole” in 1996, said Tom Perdue, a longtime Georgia strategist. “They’re for him, but they’re looking far over their shoulder hoping somebody else is going to step up.”

He said that some major Atlanta donors backing Romney have told Perdue privately that they would “jump ship really fast” if Perry runs.

Perry will get an audience with about 200 major donors at a two-day Republican Governors Association summit next week in Aspen, Colo.

Ron Nehring, a former California Republican Party chairman, said “there’s a comfort level” with Perry, who appeals to social conservatives but also has one of the nation’s best records on creating jobs.

“They also see him as someone who projects strength, who’s articulate, who has a good record to run on,” Nehring said. “He’s a very, very strong potential contender.”......

Carl Cameron, senior Fox News political correspondent, is reporting that military leaders and international experts in high levels of government have been meeting with Rick Perry.

Last night on Fox News Special Report with host Bret Baier, Carl Cameron ended his segment on the GOP Primary by reporting that Texas Gov. Rick Perry is within 2 weeks of announcing his run in the GOP presidential primary.

Cameron said Gov. Perry is meeting with “very, very senior retired defense department officials” who are briefing him on U. S. defense issues.

Along with briefings on defense issues, “international experts in high levels of government” have been meeting with Perry to discuss U.S. trade, China, foreign affairs and the economy.

Also, more information complied here:

Texas governor [Rick Perry] seeks advice on a GOP bid (also being briefed on U.S. defense, trade..)

I like Rick Perry; however, when he chose to say that Texas could secede from the Union, he made himself radioactive for higher elective office.

There is just no coming back from some statements.

That has to give one a feeling of comfort.

I give Perry a pass on being Al Gore's Texas campaign manager back in 1988. That was a long time ago.

That Perry endorsed and campaigned for Giuliani in the last election cycle is more significant to me.

I don't think he actually said that. I'm sure one of his pimps round here will correct that one way or another.

This Texan wishes we could do better than Perry but doubts that we will. And given the choice between Perry and Romney I'll certainly support Perry.

Are you joking?

I thought this was a Democrat talking point slam against Rick Perry's "off the cuff" comment about how this administration is attacking states' rights.

You're really scraping the bottom of the barrel.

I dislike Perry. The fact that he was only joking about that and would never offer the option of secession, is one my dislikes of him.

Some of the Romney supporters would prefer Perry.

So Romney is great, but Perry would be even better to them.

CW: This is BOB PERRY you’re LINKING and quoting Rove as being “friends with.” RICK Perry is not a Houston lawyer or have BOB in his name. Are things getting so tough that you’re making stuff up?
