Mitch McConnell Just Proposed the “Pontius Pilate Pass the Buck Act of 2011"
Redstate ^ | 7/12/2011 | Erick Erickson

Posted on 07/12/2011 2:23:28 PM PDT by Qbert

Mitch McConnell is right now talking about making a historic capitulation. So fearful of being blamed for a default, McConnell is proposing a compromise that lets Barack Obama raise the debt ceiling without making any spending cuts at all.

Consider sending McConnell a weasel as testament to his treachery. His address is 601 W. Broadway, Room 630, Louisville, KY 40202 and the phone number is (502) 582-6304.

McConnell’s idea is to make the debt ceiling automatic unless Congress, by a 2/3 vote blocks the increase. Oh yes, he put a salve on it by dressing it up in tough talk that, to quote the Wall Street Journal, “[a] ‘eal solution’ to U.S. fiscal problems isn’t possible as long as President Barack Obama remains in office.” So since no “real solution” is possible, McConnell proposes to go Pontius Pilate and wash his hands of spending, blaming Obama while doing nothing himself.

Here is how the plan would work.

In a nutshell, the President would get to raise the debt ceiling three times in the next year at several billion bucks a pop without making any spending cuts unless two-thirds of both houses of Congress disagree. In his press conference, McConnell says he would not give the President “unilateral authority to make spending cuts on his own,” but this plan would allow the President to raise the debt ceiling pretty much automatically. As the Politico notes,

Senate Republicans are actively pursuing a new plan under which the debt ceiling would grow in three increments over the remainder of this Congress unless lawmakers approve a veto-proof resolution of disapproval.

In effect lawmakers would be surrendering the very power of approval that the GOP has used to force the debt crisis now. But by taking the disapproval route, Republicans can shift the onus more onto the White House and Democrats since a two-thirds majority will be needed to stop any increase that President Barack Obama requests.

Yes, instead of putting the burden on the White House, McConnell would make it damn near impossible to block a debt ceiling increase. We’ve seen this before. The House once had the Gephardt rule that required the debt ceiling vote be attached to a more popular measure so members of Congress could escape a tough vote.

Consequently, the debt ceiling has gone up to $14 trillion without Congress ever having to make a tough choice about debt.

And now Mitch McConnell wants to make it even easier by allowing Congress to go through a dog and pony show of feigned cuts that never get cut while allowing escalation of our national debt. So much for accusing Barack Obama of smoke and mirrors.

2014 cannot come soon enough to destroy the political future of this weasel.

———————————– Editor’s note: I decided to make the title less incendiary.

Consider the Associated Press’s headline right now: “GOP Leader McConnell proposes giving Obama new power for automatic debt limit increase”

Updated again: Changed to title to something less incendiary. I still encourage weasels be mailed.

UPDATE: Some of the most willfully ignorant and willfully naive McConnell supporters are coming out of the woodwork to say this is not *the* plan, but a contingency plan if *the* plan can’t be agreed to. So let’s get this straight: if Democrats won’t agree to make spending cuts, we’ll fall back to the contingency where they get to raise the debt ceiling without making spending cuts.

That’s not a contingency, that’s handing the Democrats a silver platter.

All McConnell is ensuring is that Obama gets re-elected..absolutely DISGUSTING how the GOP time and time again caves to the DemocRATS..they have no spine. Sarah already said that if they cave there will be hell to pay. If she runs as an Independent who can really blame her at this point

Revenue and budgets are the responsibility of the Congress. If Sen. McConnell cannot handle that, he should resign.

for later...after the flames start.

A side note: they (gop) really are going to screw around and hand the marxist another 4 years. Unless Palin gets involved and reverses this, I see nothing positive coming up.

And some freepers, considering themselves more level headed, become irritated when other conservatives overreact at news of republican capitulation.

Obviously Mitch McConnell has been bought out to be one of the “elites”, which so many people have been saying, some of the “elites” ARE Republicans. So now BOTH parties are selling out WE THE PEOPLE, and are expecting us to go grudgingly into debt as slaves for them for a few generations as they are creating criminal wars with their illegal aliens, islamics, and communists, and as WE THE PEOPLE will be the slave population quickly rubbed out as WE THE PEOPLE are CHRISTIANS.

There is nothing in this article that matches his statements:

If they pass a debt increase of fifteen cents without a trillion in pending cuts they are moving toward the elimination of the United States. Luckily, McConnell can neither lead anyone to any destination nor lead anyone away. With the votes he has in the Senate, all be can to is blow...hard.

As much as I can tell, the people who can save the nation work in the House. So far Boehner is doing the job. So far the troops are, as well.

Outrageous, if true. That weasel McConnell is selling us out to Obama and his Marxist scheme to bankrupt America. Screw the GOP and it’s ‘leaders’ that simply lead us into being screwed over by Obama and the Democrats. McConnell’s tough talk is BS and he is a traitor to anyone that thought we might get real change in congress by electing Tea party candidates last November. Not as long as hacks like Mitch McConnell are still running things in the GOP Congressional delegations. Our only hope is House Speaker Cryin’ John Boehner will not play along and that this attempt to hand Obama a huge victory will be thwarted. I’m not holding my breath but I am exasperated by RINO sell-outs such as the weasel McConnell. This guy definitely needs to be soundly defeated in 2014. His constituents should not forget this treachery born of the genetic RINO desire to be loved by the leftmedia.

I heard of the offer on the radio. If it's untrue, it would not be the first time the Washinton press invented a story.

“This is not the whole story. It’s just the part designed to p*ss you off.”

I’m trying to sort out all the details, but doesn’t this plan beg a simple question: Is more, unchecked debt a bad thing, or not?

I have to believe that people are jumping the gun here. That is perfectly understandable, given how many times the GOP has caved in the past. We expect them to fold, and they never disappoint. But there is something else going on this time that makes me believe that McConnell might just know what he's doing, and has no intention of selling out.

Surrender is not an option this time, and every Republican in the House has to understand that. So let's see how this plays out before we start reaching for the pitchforks.

What’s so scary is that it’s not just “some” of them. It’s a majority of our GOP senators, for example—or we wouldn’t have McConnell leading them.

Correct. In the whole article there is not one direct quote of Sen. McConnell. It is very possible the whole thing is construed from what he did say, with which I was tremendously heartened.

We really need to revisit the slander law.

I don’t think they paid McConnell off...I think they found him out. They’ve probably got something on him. Boehner was going great guns on Obummer until the tabs started talking about Boehner liking to stop by the local pub every night after work, and a couple of women he was seeing...suddenly, all is quiet, no more mention of his drinking or womanizing, and he’s out golfing with Obummer.
