Japanese whalers returning to Southern Ocean
ABC News (Australia) ^ | July 13, 2011 | Sarah Clarke

Japan has confirmed its ships will be back in the Southern Ocean this year to continue its whaling program.

After an early withdrawal from last summer's so-called scientific whale hunt in the region, Japan told the International Whaling Commission meeting in the Channel Islands that it will return this year.

Australia has rejected Japan's request for greater protection against activists.

The anti-whaling activist group Sea Shepherd has confirmed that it too will continue its pursuit and return to the Southern Ocean.

With the quake/meltdown economic mess I thought there was a good chance the subsidized whaling was over. I despise the notion that Sea Shepherd will get the credit if it's stopped any other way.

It’s too bad that a clandestine Japanese submarine doesn’t just put a torpedo into that floating nest of hippies and unwashed miscreants that the Animal Planet loves to show in their “Whale Wars” show.

I’d rather someone torpedo the whaling ships. It’s a pathetic and stupid practice.

I don't know if it was the Sea Shephard or not but I watched some program on Animal Planet and was appalled. As far as I could tell, the Japanese whalers had to the legal right to do what they were doing. Yet here was Animal Planet making a reality show out of what were essentially terrorists and pirates. Do I have something wrong? Are the whalers breaking some international law/agreement?

I’d settle for two fast boats from the whaler running a line under the Hippie Ship and fouling it’s propeller.

And get some big deck guns that fire the same stinky crap that the Hippies throw at it. Plaster their ship with it.

Like everybody else, I can't stand the weirdos ineptly manning the Sea Shepherd vessels in "Whale Wars" but I also hate the damn Japanese killing hundreds of whales while violating international laws and calling it "research".

The Japanese, if left to their own devices, would eat every damn thing in the ocean, everywhere.. glad that somebody - even these twits in the Sea Shepherds - is trying to stop them.

Australia ought to send warships to the Southern Ocean instead of the surrogate hippies and stop the Japanese once and for all.

Wow that's deep. ;-) But if that's all true then the whalers should just take 'em out and send them below, below, below...

Ther's plenty of "research" that one person will call bogus but using that as an excuse for "violating international laws" is twisted. Let them eat cow, eh?

It would have to be soap to have a negative affect on the hippies.

Heh-heh.
Just one of several versions of an old mariner’s saying.

If the whalers did that, I wouldn’t get my Friday night laff-riot of hippies failing and FR would have to drop its weekly “Live” thread.

If I were in charge of the Japanese Whaling Fleet I would place large catapults on each ship and launch "Whale Guts" at the Dirty Hippies every chance I got!

I watched one program where the hippies went into major depression because the whaling ship took a whale “right in front of them”. This was right after they were all yuking it up becuase it was the “wild west” out there and they’d just attacked the whaling ship with chemical bombs or something. I thought, if this were really the “wild west” your ship and you would be at the bottom by now feeding the fishes.

Yup, Kobe beef..

Come to think of it, imports of that choice Aussie beef should more than make up for the lost whale meat in their diets. Would cost less in the long run than maintaining a fleet of specialized whaling vessels.

Them Japanese are remarkably hard to convince - Buin, Guadalcanal, Empress Augusta Bay, Betio, the Palaus, Iwo, Luzon, and Okinawa Come to mind...

This former Coastie fully believes it is only a matter of time until one or more of the Sea Shepherds crew or vessels ends up in Davy Jones locker, permanently. It is simply "when", not "if", one of these water-bourne tree-huggers ends up dead.

There isn't a professional mariner to be found in the entire organization. They don't respect the sea, who does not for long suffer fools. Their arrogance will be their downfall.

To that I will add Nagasaki. They should have waived the white flag after Hiroshima.

Yeha, why won't they just accept dependence on other countries like we do. ;-) Eat beef, it's morally superior to whale... because it just is. ;-)

I despise the thought that whaling should be ended by any form of coercion. It is a viable and sustainable fishery.
