It will never happen, but if you’re wondering what that proposed state of “South California” would look like, geographically and politically . . .
Those blue counties have about 13 million people, which would make it the country’s fifth most populous state, behind Texas, New York, Florida, and what’s left of California. It would have roughly 20 congressional districts and 22 electoral votes. It would also be heavily Republican.
Again, it will never happen; Congress and the state legislature would have to agree . . . but I wonder how many Republicans will dream of taking 22 electoral votes out of the Democrats’ column in presidential races and into the GOP one.

Both were correct (to a certain extent). They are at least as different in character as, say, the United States and Canada.
It makes sense that they become their own states.
That would virtually guarantee the others to be Dems Electoral votes. As it is, it can swing in the other direction, at least possibly. ........
California hasn't gone GOP since Reagan, or maybe Bush41. LA, SF Bay Area and Marin County outvote the conservative areas.

Of course it will never happen. It was already being proposed and widely spoken of when I moved away from the San Diego area over 30 years ago. Here in the Pacific Northwest, the same discussion has been happening for decades about Eastern Washington splitting off from Western Washington for exactly the same reasons. I guess maybe someday all the sane people will be living in Texas, causing Rep Hank Johnson to worry that, like Guam, Texas may tip over and capsize.
People are fleeing those ares...........
Looks good, but can we get a viable shipping port for S Cali?
This is a really good idea but would take a unique set of circumstances for it to happen. It would take a GOP take over of the state govt and a GOP takeover of the federal govt and then it would require that those in power at the state level be willing to allow this to go forward which would certainly doom their own positions at least in the context of California govt at the time of the partitioning. I wonder if such a thing could be accomplished through proposition.
For the country as a whole this is a great idea. The only problem is that I live in the Bay Area, so I would end up in a state that is 80% Democrat.
I think Kalipornia is giving their EC's to whoever wins the national popular vote.
Uhhhh, you know that San Diego used to home port the US Navy’s Pacific Fleet, right? One of the best natural harbors in the world that is perfectly capable of handling several aircraft carriers can certainly work for a shipping port.

Somewhat. The Dems are still short of a 2/3 majority in the state legislature, meaning the Republicans can block tax increases.
You can always move down here to South Cal and enjoy more like-minded neighbors and friends.
port issue is simple ... Long Beach moves to adjoining Orange County (which I wish would happen anyway) and takes its port with it.
