[Freedom From Religion Foundation] asks court to bar [Gov. Rick] Perry from Houston prayer rally

A group of atheists and agnostics is suing to stop Texas Governor Rick Perry from participating in his much-trumpeted prayer rally in Houston next month.

The suit says the Republican governor, who is considering a run for president, is officially endorsing evangelical Christianity in violation of the U.S. Constitution by organizing and promoting the event as a state leader and on his official Texas governor's website.

The Wisconsin-based Freedom From Religion Foundation, a government and religion watchdog group that says it has 16,600 members, filed the suit on Wednesday in a federal district court in Houston.

A Perry spokesman said the governor is moving ahead with the event, billed as "The Response" and hosted by the Mississippi-based American Family Association, a conservative Christian activist group.

"Governor Perry believes the prayer event will serve as an opportunity for Americans to pray together for our nation," spokesman Mark Miner told Reuters on Tuesday.

"This lawsuit does not affect plans for the event and it will proceed as scheduled."

"The Response" is set for August 6 at Houston's Reliant Stadium.

.....The rally is free and open to the public.

Why is it NOW that we here all about Rick Perry’s fidelity to Christianity?

Was he doing these type of things before he decided to consider running for President?

I did not hear or see or read of Governor Perry doing this in the past.

IF he only started just recently doing these types of things, then it is highly contrived and really looks bad.

Yes. He did go to prayer meetings. He also wen tto National Guard funerals. And held babies for foto ops during campaigns. And shot a coyote while jogging. And told the EU to go pound sand when they last told Texas to commute a death sentence.

So what? You’ll still rag on him I suspect.

I’ll bet they wouldn’t say squat about O’Boy attending a Mosque in Texas.

Thanks for setting the record straight. Good grief, you’d think Perry was the enemy the way some people act. Four more years of obama and no one will recognize this country. The stakes are way too high this time around to play the 100 percent purity game.

So what? You’ll still rag on him I suspect.

No, only if he started it lately.

BTW, with respect to Reagan's Amnesty, he admitted to his son Michael that is was probably the biggest mistake he ever made politically.

Now Perry on the other hand, is all Hat and no Cattle when it comes to being tough on Ilegal Immigration.

Lot's of symbolic stuff, but nothing of real consequence.

Against AZ1070.

In Mexico telling Mexican Politicians that he believes that Illegals in the country need to gain citizenship.

Now, if you want to keep your head in the sand and ignore this, that's your business.

I don't want another GWB where Illegal Immigration is concerned.

No, only if he started it lately.

Tell us more. Have you been sitting behind the Perry pew in church? Do tell us more.

BTW, with respect to Reagan's Amnesty, he admitted to his son Michael that is was probably the biggest mistake he ever made politically.

Politically? So it was correct just not politically correct? Please elaborate.

Now Perry on the other hand, is all Hat and no Cattle when it comes to being tough on Ilegal Immigration.

It's so cute when you spice it up like that. What does that mean?

Lot's of symbolic stuff, but nothing of real consequence.

That's rather vague. Please provide some links to make your case clearer.

Against AZ1070.

If you meant to say, Perry felt it wasn't a good fit for Texas, then that would be accurate.

In Mexico telling Mexican Politicians that he believes that Illegals in the country need to gain citizenship.

Please provide your link because I have one that would say that is not true.

Now, if you want to keep your head in the sand and ignore this, that's your business.

I think you need to find facts to put with your charges.

I don't want another GWB where Illegal Immigration is concerned.

What are your solutions to assist with the border security Texas has been supplying along the 1250 mile INTERNATIONAL border it shares with Mexico?

We’re just hearing about this now because a handful of Perry supporters are posting everything Perry does.

Amendment 1 “Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment OF religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof;...” OF religion NOT *from* religion. Ugh, I get so tired of those who are ignorant to what the Constitution actually says. Matter of fact, if Perry or any other person (politician or not) chooses to assemble for whatever reason, it is covered under the 1st Amendment.

I am correct in my understanding, right?

However, Rick Perry says to look elsewhere.

“Maybe people would want to lock me up,” Perry said on an American Family Association radio show. “I think about those who talk about Christian faith as being intolerant. Isn’t it just the height of intolerance to say you can’t gather together in public and pray to our God?” The Freedom From Religion Foundation, an atheist group, has filed suit against the Aug. 6 gathering at Reliant Stadium in Houston.

“You don’t hear much about the Muslims. You don’t hear much when it’s the Buddhists or whatever. I think the reason is there are those who are very concerned that the prayers will be heard and that things will happen. And that’s what happens with Christians come together and pray.”
