Reporting from Washington As negotiators reconvened at the White House on Wednesday for another round of debt talks, House Republicans appeared to dig in even deeper in their resistance to any sort of deal to raise the federal debt ceiling even as one party leader foretold disaster for the GOP if its members failed to act.
Mitch McConnell, the Senate minority leader who has proposed a fallback plan that would likely ensure the $14.3-trillion debt limit would be raised, said in a radio interview that a default by the United States could critically damage his party heading into the 2012 elections.
A default, McConnell told talk show host Laura Ingraham, destroys your brand.
The Kentucky senator said the economic consequences of a default would give President Obama an opportunity to blame the GOP for the countrys economic straits. Look, he owns the economy, McConnell said. Hes been in office for three years. We refuse to let him entice him into co-ownership of a bad economy.
McConnell said that at this point the GOP had two choices: Either make a bad deal from their perspective with Obama or take the country into default, which, McConnell suggested would do even more damage to the party. He compared the situation to 1995, when the GOP forced a government shutdown.
We know thats going to happen. Just like we knew shutting down the government in 1995 was not going to work for us, he said. It helped Bill Clinton get reelected. I refuse to help Barack Obama get reelected.
Across the Capitol, House Speaker John Boehner (R-Ohio) sounded his own kind of alarm, saying that a default would take the country into uncharted territory.

At this point, I’m beginning to think that might be a good thing.
Default on our own terms rather than have it thrust upon us.
So be it. Bring in the calvary, we can do this. If the GOP gives in, a new party emerges. Folks we are at a fork in the road. Interesting times.
** Sounds as if he is on the side of if we dont raise we are in trouble and its our fault. Brilliant McSenator, just brilliant/s grr
GOP is already damaged goods, loves taking a beating.
Idiot. Already accepting blame and defeat. Typical Rino.
Markets about to open here in a couple hours in SE Asia - the dollar is going to get pounded bad FRiends.
dont flame me but, yeah, he might be right. with only the house in control, it might be a bridge too far.
better to capture the persidency and senate in 2012 then bring out the chainsaw
There, fixed it for the chicken weasel.
No doubt. Bitch shoal be checked for mental functions. The man might be in need of treatment.
This is just unbelievable. Is Obama blackmailing Mitch McConnell or something? Is he secretly gay? Has he committed a felony that the FBI knows about?
How many times have we seen this sort of thing happen over the past 20 or 30 years, where the GOP leaders cave at the crucial moment?
If they do it again, with our country falling over a cliff, the GOP is dead. Dead, dead, dead. Gone with the Whigs.
Raising taxes will destroy your brand.Get to the mike and explain what is going on that Obama has spent more than all of the prior Presidents combined and then look into the camera and tell him we are broke and can not spend anymore it is time to really eat our pease President Obama and face up to the reality of this situation. That all of his retoric of pulling tax breaks will create even more unemployment and not amount to a hill of beans!
We already have. McConnell should be tarred and feathered.
The Republican Party acts like a battered wife. She knows it’s not her fault but still can’t help blaming herself and enabling her abuser.
Is it coincidence he caved at the exact time Obama was talking about no social security?
